Is it normal to worry that i am too prideful?

I think humility is a very important thing, but sometimes I worry that I'm too prideful and arrogant because I'm pretty sure I'm more intelligent than most of the people I know, and I think many of my female friends sort of have a crush on me even though I'm kinda weird looking. Like maybe an eccentric gay Michael Cera or Jesse Eisenberg. (Not gay, by the way!)

Is it normal to worry about this, or am I just uptight?

  • Yes, it is normal and healthy to worry about this. :)

A little bit of pride really isn't such a bad thing since it helps with self-confidence. Pride and arrogance can get in someone's way if they are unable to admit to their faults or rage at any sort of constructive criticism - it prevents them from growing. Also, prideful arrogance can be hurtful to others and can hold a person back from making sincere apologies when they've wronged someone.

You say that you are more intelligent than most people you know. Does it prevent you from being open to opinions or ideas that might conflict with yours? Sometimes people with excessive pride can be resentful of those who challenge their point of view. They end up shutting people out of their life who they don't see as being as evolved or enlightened as them.

Accept your own humanity and know that even if you excel at some things compared with others that you still have many faults just like everyone else.

    • Thanks, that was encouraging and helpful!

I'm definitely not closed-minded, and am open to being challenged and discussing things and being challenged.

  • The human mind is an incredibly false instrument; you can never truly understand the depths of its own deception.

It's very possible to be arrogant and perform mental gymnastics to somehow justify it in the space of your own mind. Be wary.

But it's normal. I sometimes think the same.

To even be concerned with it means you are not an egocentric persecutor wanting to use the laws of men or bible text to go against someone in an attempt to make yourself seem to be better. You are humble. A devil in a person would consider a haughty spirit a good thing like Goliath did before a fall.
