Is it normal to work in a restaurant and steal food off bussed plates?

Restaurant workers or past workers please read:

I'm a hostess at a local restaurant and the other day I had to bus tables outside. The customers had leftovers of free on their plate and some ketchup... no one wa out there or could see me, so i snagged a few. I get a 50% off discount if I wanted to buy an order, but I can't really afford it and I was really hungry. The food that was left was untouched and it just seems like such a waste to throw it away when I'm starving on a shift. Have you ever done this?

One of my friends used to work at a Country Club and since we live by the water it mainly served seafood. When he would bus tables, he would find a ton of plates that literally had not been touched at all, and he would eat the seafood. There would be crab, lobster, shrimp, oysters, clams, you name it. Kid ate like a king when he worked there. So you're definitely not the only one who does this.

I'm more paranoid when it comes to food and germs but I think to a lot of people it's pretty normal.

I have many friends in the service business, and, besides them taking stuff from my plate as I'm eating (I offer, too), have picked at leftovers here and there. Mostly uneaten rolls, or maybe chicken fingers..Easy food to pick up and wolf down. Servers get hungry, too, and, many employers don't give breaks often enough to let them eat. I don't see a problem with having leftovers after the customer is gone.

Well by law management has to throw it all away, so I'd say (mind you I don't ever eat after anyone, I just can't) it's better to eat it than toss it.

If you ever get caught. say dramatically "look what I've become" while eating. laughter ensues.

I agree, it seems like a huge waste to just toss out all that food. =/

I've worked in a similar situation... with what resturants pay, it's no wonder people want to grab food off a bussed plate.

Have I done it personally? No... I'm way too paranoid about getting some disease or something from it, even if it was untouched. If we get something sent back... wrong order, or just a picky customer, I'd grab it, though.
