I mean, if you're enslaving women in prostitution, dealing in illegal drugs, and have shot and killed several police officers, it only seems logical to keep quiet about it. Writing songs about it seems reckless at best.
Also, why do rappers keep doing that thing with their hands? It looks like they're throwing invisible paper planes at us.
Most if not all rappers do not actually do these things. They express the things they see around them. It's artistic license.

Seriously though, people out there make music about murder and cutting people up. Doesn't mean they actually do those things, and I doubt that many rappers are actually pimping on the side. XD
There's lot's of good rap out there, you're only referring to a small subset of the genre as a whole. Like with any genre of music you need to dig through the mindless dribble in order to find the good shit.

They either are rapping about what they did in the past, or else see happening or what they would like to do. If you talk about you like big butts you are just saying you like big buts what cop is going to convict you for that? and in fact a some of these people got into crap growing up and if they are saying they did this stuff they probably already got arrested for it.
I live in a "black" community so it was easy to see that everyone just wants to fit in or else be called a punk ass. Plus, because of society, it's become a social norm
Real simple answer:
1) Throw down a beat
2) Write down lyrics ABOUT beating your girlfriend/wife
3) You have to be black
4) Make millions of $$$
Money, sex, and women. Why else do you think they are doing it? Do you honestly need to ask?
Not all rappers write about these kinds of things, but I understand that a majority of them do which is why I stopped listening to rap music to begin with. My theory is that this is the kind of stuff they grew up around. A lot of rapper did not begin successful, they started off in the hood. I think a lot of them are rapping about what they know. And of course you have some that do it because that's what everyone else it doing. Most of these guys grew up in the prostitution, drugs, club environment, as well as rap music, so it's likely that they're lyrics would represent that. Just like a lot of Christian musician grew up in the church. I think it all has to do with where your from and your environment.
Rap is a form of self-expression, an art form which shouldn't be taken as literal. Disliking the messages in most modern rap music is perfectly normal though.
They become rappers because that's a way to make a living like becoming a doctor or a nurse or a teacher. It's a job that pay well
