Is it normal to wonder what would happen if gravity was reversed?

Like, would we develop claws for hands and hang upside-down from rings placed in the floor when we went outside. Or would we have velcro shoes.

Would toilets be on the ceiling? Would carpets stay clean because all the dirt fell upwards away from them?

And what would happen to all the monkeys in their trees?

Reverse gravity = End. Thats pretty much it right now we would all die if that happened...

It's a good thought. But in reality, if entire gravity were reversed the universe would be destroyed. The suns would explode and our planet and all planets would fall apart :/

One of my greatest phobias would become a reality. We would fall into outerspace and suffocate from lack of oxygen.

This did not cross my mind as what goes up comes down its a bit worrying to read about this sola storm on the way friday knocking out all gadgets .

That is something to think about.

ok how about with out all the death and stuff? what if gravity could be controlled? if so i would fly through the sky with Chuck Norris nakid with a troll face mask on :3

Gravity can be controlled. It's called work. Any time you (or anyone or anything in nature) does work, it is effectively controlling gravity.

Star Wars is science-fiction and the "Force (Star Wars)" has no warp and woof in science-fact.

so? yoda said the force binds the universe together and dosnt gravity do the same thing?

Gravity is a Universal force, but it does not 'bind' because gravity works in all directions. If it did 'bind', then the Universe would be a massive singularity, meaning a super giant black hole.
It requires much energy to do much work to overcome gravitational force.

Oh, one last thing. What if it has always been like this? What if gravity had never pointed down in the first place? Well, if that's the case, we can forget about all the exploding and move straight on to the radioactive soup stage. Galaxies would never form, much less stars or planets, because orbits would be almost impossobke. Everything would just spread out into nothing right from the big bang.

    Have a nice day!

Gravity does not "point down." Gravity points equally in all directions.

Also possible is that you're referring to it happening over thoisands, or eben millions, of years. Well, sorry to dissappoint you, but we'd still all die. The universe would still become a thin soup. The only difference is that we'd have at least a few month, maybe more, of insane panic as we desperately try to find a way to save ourselves. In all likely hood, the world would descend into chaos. Governments would be toppled overnight, anarchy would rule, and the novelty of being able to jump really high would quickly wear off. Then we'd suffocate to death, and everything I mentioned in tge above would happen.

Again, I hope this answers your question!

If gravity were to suddenly reverse, the immediate effect would be that we would all feel incredibly nauseated and start falling upwards, with other smallish objects. If we were outside we would quickly suffocate as we got further out, where the air is too thin to breath. If we were inside, we woupd find ourselves pinned to the ceiling. Very quickly after that, most buildings would start to fall apart, the reversed gravity literally pulling them out of the ground, and the dirt on the ground and the plants/trees would all fly up into the air. The oceans would spew their water all over the place. A little later, even reinforced earthquake-resistant structures would collapse, and the earth's crust would start to crack, sending chunks of rock flying around in the air. After that - depending on the speed of the reversal, anything from a couple of hours to many days - the crust would explode altogether, and the mantle would start to deform, bulging out and spreading as gravity pulled it away from the core. The liquid parts of the earth's interior would probably break through the mentle in places, squirting all over the place, abd eventually freezing and shattering. Then the core itself would be blown apart. In all likelyhood, this would trigger an enormous nuclear explosion, engulfing the remains of the earth. All the while, the sun has been going crazy, expanding a million tines faster than it was supposed to.A while after the earth's demise ,it would explode rather spectacularly, dousing the entire solar system in fire and radiation. The other stars across the galaxy would do similar things. Finally, the supermassive black hole which our galaxy is formed around would start spitting out random matter all over the place with increasing speed, essentially destroying itself. the remains of the star systems would drift apart, propelled by the feeble remains of the reversed gravity. Years later, the universe would settle out into a slightly radioactive soup, with a good few light years from one particle to the next.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes. Hope this helps!

I didn't think of this as an absence of gravity, just it flowing in the other direction. Was it always this way or did it just happen overnight? If it was always this way, I imagine all the water would be in the sky and humans would need both gills and wings. But what would the core of the earth do? Would it fracture and fall to the sky? And dear god, volcanoes! Now I'm going to have nightmares, thanks.

    Gravity is reversed.
All massenergy in the Universe, including antimatter, has gravity.
Think about it this way; both the Earth and yourself have gravity. Both are attracted to eachother. Since there is far more matter in the Earth, you are overwhelmed by the Earth's gravity. Gravity is a two-way "street".
The reason for gravitational attraction, is because massenergy in the Universe creates a curvature in space.
There is no such thing as antigravity in this Universe, or in any other Universe.

      • suckonthis9

No. What I'm saying is that antigravity (what the poster alluded to), is impossible.
Gravity is a congruent force throughout the Universe, whether it is an ordinary matter Universe or an antimatter Universe.

I don't think you understand what gravity is. All objects, including you have a gravitational pull on all other objects around them. The mass of the object determines the amount of gravitational force exerted. Gravity doesn't simply mean falling down onto the Earth.
