Is it normal to wonder what people think of american accents?

What do people (especially English) people think about American peoples accents? (I don't mean hillbilly talk I mean normal American talking) and do they talk in an American accent ever like joking around? I was just thinking about it and wondering what people think.

  • I've wondered the same thing. Like if an american learns to speak a language, what kind of accent do we have talking to people of that language.

I'm English and I don't really like American accents. Some American voices really grate on me-there is often a type of 'croak' in the voice. Difficult to explain but I hear it often.
American accents are so common on TV/in films thse days. I like rare accents.

I'm British and the American accent is very easy to understand but to me it seems a lot of the ones you hear, on T.V for example sound really whiney or nasally. No offense if I'm grossly over generalizing :)

Brit here - yes, the American accent seems strong and very different, and we do imitate it sometimes for a laugh. It's weird though, as many American TV shows and films are popular here and for some reason the accents aren't as noticeable as they are in real life - when I was younger I used to think that was just the way people talked on TV!

Btw, it's tough for us to tell the Canadian and US accents apart. I found an easy way when backpacking: they're not in America? Canadian.

I wonder this constantly! I'm American, with a slight Californian accent, and I personally love to have a laugh by imitating other accents from around the world. But obviously if you've developed an accent from birth there's no way to ever be able to experience it as objectively as someone who hasn't :(

I love the comments from all the Brits, though! I had a feeling our accent was a bit harsh, but croaking robots? We can't all have sexy, enchanting accents like you guys...

Which American accent are you talking about? There are southern, northern, east coast, west coast accents, etc. I'm from southern Ohio. People from the northern part of the state think we talk like a bunch of hicks. Haha

Well as a non American english speaker - we (outside the US) are quite familiar with the General American accent via the media such as movies, news programmes, etc.

American accents? Does that even exist? There are hundreds of American accents. There is Cuban Spanish, Colombian Spanish, costarrican spanish, united states English depending on the state, French from Canada, French from guayana, Brazilian Portuguese and the list goes on.

  • I've never really noticed that americans have an accent. But I'm from Canada so I guess it's pretty similar here!

Hey. I'm English, and yes, when I'm with friends, we sometimes do mimic the American accent just as a joke. I'm pretty rubbish. Personally, I'm not a massive fan of the American accent just because it's so different and quite harsh in comparison to the English. I love the Geordie (Newcastle) accent because it's so smooth and and just generally lovely, but I guess you guys don't understand it so much. So just my personal opinion, but I'm not a huge fan, but most of my mates like it :)

I am from the west indies living in Toronto for a few yrs now and I have mocked American accents but all accents are funny to me really... Even my own, hearing my friends and bf try to mock me is always interesting. I always get asked if I'm south African, British or Irish cuz now my accent has been watered down with cAnadian I guess so I sound fancy to all my family back home lol

    In my experience no.
We do notice the lack of accent, but mostly it's just the weird pronunciations (Canadian English is just a jumble of American English and true English).
I've never known anyone to playfully mimic an American 'accent', the only case I can think of would be mimicking a line from a movie.. but even that's rare.

there are various kinds of American accents. which one do you consider "normal?"

Yeah sure occasionally you mime what someone else says with a different accent but for a joke but think of it like this if your having a normal day and you hear a Aussie its abnormal. Anyway I actually like american accents I think it seems kinda cool but I spoke to some Americans and canadiens (can't tell the difference) one did lie in Canada anyway they all said that they didn't like there accent and that it's boring so I hope that answers you question (and a lil more :) )
