Is it normal to withhold someone's property until they pay you back?

My ex-housemate owes me heaps of money and he moved out. I caught him in the act (while he was unloading the first lot in his new house) and packed up his remaining stuff and stored it away in a secret place. I won't release it until he pays up. He even sent the cops around and I STILL wouldn't release his stuff. (The cops had no warrant so i told them to get off my property and they did. Ex-housemate left the stuff behind so there was nothing the cops could do as I haven't broken the law.)

    OP I would exercise caution when it comes to claiming property. Though your roommate did not pay his share of the rent, in some jurisdictions to acquire property in that manner is illegal. Your antics could lead you into deeper trouble.

    Was there a rental agreement that you could use in a disputes court/Small Claims Tribunal to claim outstanding rent?

    Uhm, you need to be careful with this. As dinz said, this may be illegal in your jurisdiction considering the property was never yours to begin with. You could be arrested and charged with theft.

    Take him to a civil small claims court before this gets out of hand.

        What is the problem with americanhoney? All he/she does is randomly and inappropriately play the race card. Your posts are always well-written, intelligent, useful and thoughtful and you don't fit the racist stereotype. I've read many of your posts and you have never even mentioned race, let alone been disparaging in that department. AH needs to just f%$k right off out of this website.
