Is it normal to wish you had no emotions?

I am a teenager and I believe that emotions cloud judgement and are the only real reason conflicts start. I wish i had no emotions or ego whatsoever so i could focus only on gaining knowledge without having to worry about desires or anything like that.

      Yes, like you say.

I've been "emotionaless" for over a half year and it's terrible. You don't cry over terrible things anymore and it makes you depressive. Really, emotions are here for a reason.

      • I would agree. I'm not a sociopath, despite what others say on here. I understand right from wrong, but I haven't had any real emotions since I was about nine to ten years old.
It's a cold place. Although, it has it's benefits. People that live this way don't have to deal with sadness that much, just emptyness.

I don't complain about it. I have grown up this way and become used to it at a young age. I don't think people that haven't grown up with no emotions from a young age really get the full of the emotionless part. I still think they hold on to the sadness they have, like you said, depression. I've become used to being this way, which is why I'm not depressed. I haven't been sad about it, either.

I'm comfortable being the way I am with this way now. Perhaps one day you will too and escape the depression.

Besides, people like this get very good at faking emotions, so it doesn't become a matter of people realizing you aren't happy.

It is common to think this, especially if you've found yourself in situations like that before, but to an extent it is a black and white way to view the world. Similar to the Buddhist who wishes to eliminate all desire I feel the intention is good, but the thought process not giving enough credit to the broad scope of duality.

Even though I know some people have discredited the older philosophers due to the differences between then and now, I like the way Plato split it up. There are appetites, emotions, and reason. Emotions should rule appetites, and reason should rule emotion, so that all things are checked and balanced accordingly.

I often wish I could turn my emotions off. Living by logic instead of emotion would make life easier. But at the same time without any emotions I would also not feel any enjoyment in achieving goals. Which would make perusing goals pointless and therefore I wouldn't bother. And without emotions I'm sure I would push everyone out of my life. So, I'm not really sure which would be better. They both have negatives and positives sadly. It would be nice to be able to turn them on and off at will though.

    I agree 100% with OP.
I have actually hardened up over time and learned to shut my emotion out.
I have almost achieved that goal.
It takes something extremely serious or funny to get any reaction out of me whatsoever. People are shocked if they see me smile, some people even make it their mission to get a reaction out of me. Most fail miserably.

    You can do it, OP!

It is not abnormal to wish that you have no emotions, they make things harder throughout everyday life. Without emotions you would not care what happens to people in your family, or your friends, or even to yourself. Emotions are not always a bad thing, they are one of the things that humans and other animals use to grow. I do not show a lot emotion myself, I council others on a regular basis that do not show a whole lot of emotion until I figure out just the right things that will "set them off" and then the emotions just pour out. There is a psychological term for people that have truely have no emotions (I just looked through my PDR for it, but kept coming up narsicistic disorders, depression, and bi-polar disorders). Everything that you mentioned is normal in terms of wanting to stop and aviod confrontation, but the fact is (barring a psychological disorder) we all have emotions, some of us are able to bury them, and some people just let them comeout all the time. As long as you have control over your emotions in a healthy way, that is to say, as long as you don't let your emotions run everything that you do or allow you to do things that you otherwise would not have done (slashing a girlfriends tires if she breaks up with you, or something to that effect0 then they are a healthy and normal part of every day life.

I agree that sometimes it clouds judgement, but I also think that the opposite could be argued for some things.

It's normal. I don't show a whole hell of a lot of emotion. As far as it clouding judgement, i agree for the most part.
