When you're in a job where clients don't see you I don't see a reason to dress up. Have you asked your boss why he wants that?
P.S.: I'm in the lucky position that clients don't want designers to look too well adjusted anyway. So I can wear whatever I want.
You can start slow, but first of all, remove the "hoodie", then maybe whatever bottoms you are currently wearing. Then, look around and see what the others are wearing for "tops" or shirts. You might keep your job longer if you do this. Otherwise, look around for another job because when a "downturn" occurs you will be gone.
Dressing well or appropriately shows respect for yourself and others.
Stop being such a slob.
Do what your boss wants at least, in terms of fashion, otherwise you may find yourself out of a job. By ignoring him on this and doing what you want you are showing him that you don't respect him. If a person is being disrespectful of their boss, do they really deserve to work in the business where he worked so hard to achieve such a high position? Also, let's say if someone of high professional status were to come check out the business and saw you in casual dress while everyone else was wearing formal clothing. How do you think this person would take this? It would reflect not only poorly on the company but the boss as well for being too incompetent to make an underling listen to his instructions and the rules of the company.
