Is it normal to wear sports clothes to college?

I like to wear sporty looking clothes at college, not jeans and all that crap. But as I'm walking around I see that I'm like the only one dressed like this. When I say sporty clothes I mean basically tracksuit trousers and a basically a a shirt from a sports shop.

At university of texas, 80% of the girls in my classes wear either shorts, tennis shoes, and t-shirts (in the summer) or leggings, tennis shoes, and sweatshirts (in the winter). I don't really pay attention to what the guys wear, but I doubt you would be out of place here, male or female.

I also wear sweat pants and a sports jacket to school, especially if I attend a morning class. Even though people have conformed to the thought of dressing professionally (or casually, at the very least) in an educational institution, dressing comfortably is what's important. Besides, you should dress how you want to after having purchased your last chemistry textbook for $250.

    • People who dress comfortably to classes rarely seem to make much of a positive impression on the professors who will be writing their letters of reference when they want to further their education beyond an undergraduate degree.

But, hey, it's comfortable and not everyone will need references, so why not.

If you were a professor and one of your students has the highest average in the class, yet usually wears a trifling attire, would you write him/her a reference?

        • Possibly.

Academic transcripts are used to explain a student's academic achievements. A letter of reference, however, explains the personal impression the professor has of the student. That impression includes things like the student's disposition and [or] professionalism, which is something graduate schools and some employers are interested in. Grades are only one part of the whole picture.

  • The way you're dressing is very casual. Other students probably want to look more grown up, that's why they don't look like they're about to go have a workout at the gym.
