Is it normal to wear disposable contacts far beyond the guidelines?

I wear disposable contacts that are supposed to be thrown out after 30 days, but I wear them until they are unwearable. I don't see the point of throwing them out if they are still comfortable, clear and undamaged. They usually last me 2 to 3 months. IIN?

To a certain extent, it's fine. Taking it too far can be damaging to your eyes though.

I don't suggest doing that. I did that for a while and ended up with corneal ulcers on my eyes. That was the worst. My eyes were burning and watering uncontrollably and I had to put 2 different prescription eye drops that made my eyes hurt even more. It was awful.

Wearing contacts too long can create damage to your eyes.

    • Well duh but I don't wear them anymore if they are damaged or uncomfortable.

They don't magically self-destruct after 30 days, if they still feel fine then there's nothing wrong with them. They just say 30 days to be overly safe, not get sued and to make more money on selling contacts.

Yes but you are still not suppose to wear them over the reccomended days or it can create damage. Listen to your doctor if you do not want to go blind. Since this is not going to help your eyes at all.

It's okay as long as you take them out every night and soak them in cleaning solution.

I think it's too much of a risk worth taking. I was talking to my eye doctor today and we were discussing the dangers of contacts. He said that people often push their luck and misuse them. The risk of a fungal or other infection is apparently rare. You should follow the instructions. He says that if the contacts don't feel right: (uncomfortable, dry, etc) and your eyes hurt, you need to listen to them and take them out. The people who didn't follow the instructions often regret it and sometimes the effects are permanent.
