Is it normal to wear clothes until they disintegrate?

I wear my clothing and shoes until they are absolutely, positively worn the fuck out.

By worn out I mean beyond threadbare. They fell the fuck apart. They disintegrated, vaporized, disappeared. I don't want you to be confused and think that I will toss something out for merely having a hole, stain or tear. Oh no! No, no NO! I mean literally it has to cease to function COMPLETELY.

The picture is of my sneakers I've had for 5 years and wear almost every day. As you can see the tread is completely worn off in some areas!! It almost feels like I'm barefoot!

Is this normal?

Totally normal. I had a Jack Daniels t-shirt from college that literally tore apart and faded away after years of wearing it. Was pulling it off one night, and it tore nearly into two.

My older sister had a pair of jeans shorts..old, ratty, showed off about half of her ass..Wore them until they, too, frayed apart and separated. Would wear them during home gatherings often (always looked forward to her ass in those tiny shorts), and one hot labor day party, didn't have them on. I asked her, jokingly, hey, where's the famous shorts? Told me they finally peeled apart, but still had a pair of old, green, cotton shorts that were torn on each side. Went upstairs and put them on for me instead.

  • With little money a lot of us our doing this now..though I try to use old clothes for craft or recycle them afterward. I made a little bag out of an old pair of jeans using the back pocket as an extra feature. Also made a draw string dog treat bag and also just finished making a jewellery hanger so my necklaces aren't tangled now. (Just a metal coat hanger, wooden clothes pegs attached then strips of cardboard with fabric wrapped around them hanging by the pegs and the jewellery is wrapped around each strip of card . They're all far from perfect but with no money its a symbol of my life.

Your shoes look good from the pic...if their uncomfortable have you tried just putting an insole in them to help cushion the blow under foot?

i wore my nighttime/around the house shirt until it was in shreds. but all my other clothes i've had for a long time and they aren't worn out. i guess i do stop wearing shirts once there is 4 or more small holes in it though. but that is because it gets really uncomfortable having the holes rubbing against my skin all day. and shoes are the same, once they get really worn down, especially around the inner heel, i can't comfortably walk around in them anymore, and i get new ones.

Most of my clothes have some sort of hole or stain. And I only buy new shoes once the old pair starts to take on too much water for comfort.

You should see MY shoes. I have black work tennis shoes. Bought them 6 months ago. The left one is fine, a little wore. The right one is horrid. The sole separated from shoe and the toe looks like a moccasin with the sole flapping underneath. My husband had to seal it back together with auto gasket-maker.

Right now I am wearing a shirt which was worn also by my grandfather who died more than 15 years ago. And I still have a few pieces of clothing which I wore also at my secondary school which I finished 18 years ago.
So I see nothing abnormal in your case.

So you were just at Walmart or something one day and your clothes just crumbled off your body?

    Sounds normal to me.
The canvas portions of my converses are largely no longer canvas and are at this point bits and pieces of leather and denim from other clothes sewn in with dental floss where I was out of thread.
The bottoms are completely smooth. I'm contemplating gluing slipper treads to the bottoms.
    I'd never throw them out.
They're like a part of me now.

I have continued to wear clothes that have become worn down, but some were so messed up that I only wear inside my house.

My last pair of converse high tops were badly chewed by my dog and at the time, I believe those were the only "wearable" shoes I had at the time.

I once got my suede skate shoes soaking wet so, I washed and dried them. When I took them out I tried to wear them but it was impossible. I'm guessing it was the was too blame because the sole bent upwards around the end of the laces. The shoe had shrunk and it was beyond painful having to wear them. Eventually, I got rid of them and bought a new pair of shoes.

I've had the most problems with pants. Brands and the materials they use make a huge difference. I used to wear cheeper denim and it didn't take many washes for them pants to start to tear. I believe about 3 pairs deteriorated near the bottom of the font pocket. These tears were rather close to my crotch so I having to sew them. The stitches would stay in for a while but then they would unmend themselves. I also had a par of corduroys and they tore in different places. One pair in the back near my tush and in the front. I loved those pants and I did my best to repair them but they kept falling into tatters again!

For my shirts, a few have gotten holes in them but the majority of them got a permanent stain in them and a few others shrunk. One shirt I made the mistake of wearing it brand new to a art class where I managed to get yellow acrylic on it so, it became a sleep shirt. Then one eventful night, I was drinking hot coffee and I spilled it. Some of it got on the bottom of that shirt but the majority of it got on my super Mario lounge pants. I tried to wash the stains out but they still remain. The lounge pants I'm wearing now are torn at the bottom of the leg, but the rest of them are okay.

Hah, you should see my Converses. They're seeing their last days unfortunately. I've also had mine for years, and wear them pretty much every day. They are so close to falling to bits, though. Sigh, I'm going to miss them. I need to get some new ones. But yeah, I understand.:'/

I wish I could post pictures in reply. We could have a proper battle with this. By unfortunate circumstance, though, every single thing I am wearing at the moment has only been worn once or twice.

However, in the last week, I threw out my favourite jeans (that eventually had a six inch tear in the crotch area - and bear in mind I don't often wear underwear), my boots (which I melted the glue in when I put them in the washing machine so the soles no longer fitted the uppers) and a shirt with the stains of three different curries (none of which are visible when I wear a jacket). My beloved Air Max 90's (that have had a hole in the sole for six months) have only just been replaced because I stood on a bit of glass while I was wearing them.

    • GDP growth created by unnecessary new purchases doesn't mean sustainable growth in the long run. It just wastes resources. If there is even a slight downturn and people start consuming less, elastic goods such as shoes that people dont need will be the first to go. Thousands of workers will lose jobs because their job is to make shoes that people don't need. Besides, 95% of all shoes are made in China nowadays, I dont know where you live. But if its china I understand where you're coming from.

I doubt that OP is being a miser and not spending money. He probably invests the money that he saves on shoes more wisely, I highly doubt that he's stashing it under his mattress of something
