Is it normal to wash my clothes in the dishwasher?

I live with my brother at the moment and recently we broke our stackable washing machine and dryer when we tried to use the latter as a rock tumbler and it caught fire burning the entire unit. So anyways since then we've been using our dishwasher to wash our clothes and I'm starting to worry if it's bad for our skin? Also is it dangerous to be drying them in the oven? Because we were thinking we may want to cook food in the oven at the same time as drying clothes.. like roasting a turkey, so not to waste the power. My brother tried to dry them in the microwave but we figured it would take too long and they end up smelling like bacon. Anyways if it ends up being safe I may end up always just using a dishwasher to clean my clothes because I think it takes out stains better.

I always just wore wet clothes and let my bodies thermal energy in conjunction with the sun dry them...i find they feel better this way....

So, my comforter on my bed is too large to fit in the washer. Could I really put it in the dishwasher? This sounds a bit ghetto, but cheaper than $36 to get it laundered around the corner from my office. Let me know if you can actually do that.

The nails in the processor thing is a no go. If the processor is feeling lonely, you could always use it to make confetti, or to chop your pets' food for easier consumption.

Actually ya, that's one of the first things I tried in the dishwasher... Worked great. Try it out and let me know how it goes.

Well if your nails are too long u could switch the food processor on and put yur finger in to trim your nails.... Careful tho, be a bit keen and it's bye bye fingers !!!! Any ideas for the vacuum cleaner?

interesting. never heard of such a thing... as long as you don't put dish washing soap in the dishwasher when washing your clothes you should be fine. as for putting your clothes in the oven that sounds a little dangerous. i would avoid that especially because you could burn your clothes. but if you have to do it make sure to keep an eye on it.

anyhow i am sure there is a laundry mat near by! that would save you a lot of trouble and possible risks!!!

  • thats funny and useful. i have a way to iron as well, you take the dry clothes and lay them under the mattress, in the morning they are crease free

Genius! I am learning so much today. I do the oven thing for my jeans when I'm in a hurry because they take so long to dry, but I never considered the dishwasher or the bed thing.

I feel sure I'm not getting optimal use out of my food processor, as well.

That is a useful idea yes since my brother also converted our iron into a grilled cheese maker. Oh ya he also turned our only mattress into a makeshift car powered by an electric fan and two toasters... Just to get to work and maybe to go on vacation with some friends.

WOW. Just WOW. Good job being a total irresponsible dolt of a tenant. Maybe if you owned your own appliances you would be less likely to... say... BURN DOWN YOUR APARTMENT??! I just don't understand you people. And I BET that you have a youtube video uploaded with you and your friends doing this and laughing and thinking you're so cool and original. Let me just inform you that you are neither cool nor original. And as a matter of fact, I would like to inform you that you fail at being a human being. UNbelievable. My Dad used to be a landlord; but he had to sell and get out of the business because of college age alcoholic teenagers that have no concept of decency or care about hurting others or costing them financial ruin. So, was it worth all the money your LANDLORD (not you) had to dish out to repair your apartment AS WELL AS any damage done to adjacent apartments? I hope you were able to tumble a friggin 5 carat perfect diamond in that dryer that you can hand over to your landlord for all the trouble you caused them. Did you even admit to causing that fire? You are a total lame jerkwad and I just pray for God to have mercy on you because that scripture about reaping what you sew... yeah you'd be in for some crappola.

Learn from your stupidity lesson and don't break your landlord's (or parent's) dishwasher and stove as well! Instead, you should GROW UP and GET A JOB to earn the money to pay for the damages you've already caused.

Or, you could always go to a public laundry mat.

This is a fire hazard so, if you don't want to lose your precious kitchen technology you'd better find another method of washing and drying.

What you could do is get a washing board and some kind of metal tub to wash your clothes. For drying, you'll have to set up a clothes line in the backyard and get clothespins. The wind and the sun combined will dry your clothes and you'll be saving on money and energy if you do it this way! Just have someone to watch the clothes incase someone tries to steal them.

So cute and funny I peed... I am actually what you would say... of an age. Old to you kiddos, and I wandered here wondering this FOR REAL!!
But first of all, I've dried clothes in the oven MANY times, the requisite is that you are a little bit SMART. Ouch. So... only some of you should ever try it. Low temp, door ajar and not your besties and WATCH it. And, not for loads, just the occasional needful item or two. I have done this with jeans! Just turn them inside-out. And remember, clean racks so you don't have oil stains ; )

Second... I'm going to try it, the dishwasher. Now, hoping I've learned some stuff in life, I'll put it in an open-weave delicates laundry bag, not too many things.. and NOT use any foaming soaps, like dish or laundry as they WILL give you the sitcom foam leaking situation. A little dishwasher soap - why not? ... for the initial wash, none for rinse so it does all rinse out.
I'll start with this on top, possibly with an item on it to secure it... graduate to the bottom rack w/more if it works well enough. In any case, this will be a few items, not a typical load of laundry.

I have a fold out drying rack, they are fairly cheap and fold away... I won't be expecting to wear the stuff in 30 minutes so it works for me.
P.S. All this because sometimes I cannot get to the "laundry mat"......

thats pretty lazy. when my clothes dryer stopped drying, i actually found the problem (a blown fuse) and i fixed it. its sad that even though there are two "men" in your house, not one of you can probably fix anything.

Actually we DID fix it once, after we broke it trying to use it to cook 2 chickens. I'm not sure what went wrong.... But the second time using it as a rock tumbler finished it off I think.

Why would it be bad for your skin? Are you using dish detergent?

Obviously this isn't what the machine is intended for. I doubt the clothes are getting very clean without agitation. And the oven is just asking for a house fire.

    Go to a laundromat.

  • I actually did try heating up my clothes in the oven a couple of times after seeing Kramer do it on Seinfeld (he's one of my personal heroes). Unfortunately, my mom found out and wasn't too happy about it.
