I have never been in a fistfight.

Ever.

I live in a "rough" area of town, I insult people's intelligence on a regular basis, and I make plenty of veiled (empty) threats, as one must do to defend one's reputation.

Conversely, I am a geek and a wimp. I've lost arm-wrestling matches to people half my size. No combat skills, no methods of self-defense, a low pain tolerance, and no people willing to defend me if violence did occur.

I have seen fights break out over trivial matters, with people I was speaking to mere minutes earlier. People walk through crowds, shoving people out of their way, and steer out of my path. Why is this? You ask. Surely, if you are a geek, as you claim to be, people would be lining up to beat you up?

It is because I am goddamn humongous. In 9th grade, I was 6'3" with a full goatee. People see me and back up. They don't get any more agreeable, but they choose their words carefully.

Thing is, if I WAS attacked, I would most liked be on the ground in less than half a minute. But no one ever tries. The only stories I've heard similar to this were told as joke.

    So you may not be a fighter but you know your size intimidates people, so you insult people knowing because of your size they wont take a chance , well that makes you a bit of a bully in my eyes sorry, when i was younger there was a huge fat girl who tried too bully me , im only small, was even smaller back then , she tried and failed cos i knocked her the fook out in front of all her little suckarse followers ha , moral of this story is , the bigger they are , the harder they fall lmao .

    It's strange how similar and different we are, at the same time. I live in a rough part of town too and have also never been started with, and for the same reasons as you. According to a friend, I look "like I could do some damage". I only lose at arm-wrestling when people cheat or it's two on one. I'm physically imposing. But unlike you, I never go about insulting people or making veiled threats for reputation's sake. Maybe it's that I don't need to, I don't know. Either way, it was strange reading this.

      Well, it's not actually reputation, that was just a bad choice of words.

      In my area, if you don't retort or even reply to threats and insults, it labels you as someone unwilling to defend themselves, which makes them a massive target. I've seen one guy keep silent, kick his attacker's ass in no time flat, yet no one seems to remember it, and he gets into fights on a regular basis.

      It's kind of funny, because most if not all of my "peers" are idiots, so I can sometimes get away with yelling a string of German or Latin and laugh, them assuming it was an insult. It works better for me than most people, because #1 I wear a trench coat to school, #2 the popular opinion is that I'm insane.

      When the Columbine caricature starts yelling in Latin, people get edgy.

    Appearance is one of the greatest things in the world it can make people scared, happy,sad and angry aslong as you keep up the appearance you wont have any problems. In life all you have to do is look like something to be it (I dont agree with this at all) but its the way the world works.
