Is it normal to want to stand my mil up?

My husband just announced my MIL is coming to visit. She and I really don't get along; she makes inappropriate comments on how I live my life, my values, where I'm at in my life, and so on. I could elaborate, but I won't bore you: basically, just assume anything dumb a MIL could say, she says.

My husband said he'd tell her I'm "too busy" to spend much time with her during her visit, which is actually true (I work 60-80 hours weekly), but that I need to spend a weekend day with her. I told him I would, but I'm thinking about finding a random excuse and backing out at the last minute, then either taking myself out for a cup of coffee and a walk or maybe meeting a friend for a few hours. Anything but suffering through her running her mouth about shit she knows NOTHING about like she's the world's foremost expert.

I know this is douchey behavior, but is this normal?

    If she stresses you out, then go ahead and take that day for yourself. There's nothing douchy about it.

    Conflict avoidance with in-laws is important. She should try to avoid conflicts with you. Have your husband tell her that spending the day together is a bad idea.

    Instead of standing her up why not stand up to her? Would your husband back you up and support you on that?

    Be humble and maybe learn something but if she is really critical tell her if she was nicer you would want to hang out with her

    Does your MIL visit all the time?
    If not, how about you be the bigger person and just put up with her for an afternoon? What harm could it possibly do and it might be a grand step to mellowing out your relationship with her.
    Unless of course, you're about to divorce your husband and you won't have to put up with this woman for much longer. Then go ahead and and take that day for yourself, and fuck your husband's feelings all together.
