Is it normal to want to share obscure music with is it normal users?

I don't mean actually share it. What I mean is that I have some songs that are my favourites but that at least 99% of is it normal wouldn't ever have heard. Is it normal to want to share, say, YouTube videos of them so that we can all listen to some new music? If people are interested, I may post on my own story. If you have similar things you'd like to post, feel free.

Only rules of the game are: Don't swamp the post. Let us say you're only allowed a maximum of three songs posted each. Also, no chart music. We've all heard that. It's got to be stuff that hasn't been in the charts recently (or ever would be nice).

      same band.

I guess that's my limit of three. I have bad taste in music, overall, but perhaps there are a couple of songs which I like that others might enjoy too. :/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOEJB45OmK0 <-- Criminally obscure pop punk/emo band, although I don't know anyone here who's into that sort of music. I could equally have chosen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiCit3G4YRU Those are two of my favourite not-particularly-popular bands at the moment, and have been for a long time.

http://www.last.fm/listen/globaltags/post-rock <-- Anything here. Good background music, but I've not been into post-rock long enough to give specific bands or songs I especially love.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4G0SIXxx2U <-- Arguably pretentious jazz-metal-progressive-genre-defying music.

        • I was vaguely aware of some of the stuff Ninja Tune manage and I like it quite a lot. Boards of Canada I only know about because of you, funnily enough. You either mentioned it before or had it in your profile and I went and did a bit of YouTubing and I still listen now and again. :P

Cool! I'm surprised you remember, I don't even remember..! Maybe some other artists you've heard of - Groove Armada, Nightmares on Wax, The Avalanches, Royksopp? those are actually pretty popular as far as most of the music I listen to, but still kind of obscure I think... and about dZihan and Kamien- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2s1aO7Tukk this is my favorite song of theirs, but that whole album is pretty cool
            hope you enjoy :))

            • Apart from The Avalanches, I do own music from all of those bands and really like them all. Groove Armada tends to put me in a good mood, as does Morcheeba and Sneaker Pimps. I really liked the Dzihan & Kamien track too. We have some similar tastes! :)

Early Eighties. Never really made it. Includes Charlie Higson, probably best known for UK TV Comedy 'The Fast Show'.

How do you know 99% of us haven't heard it? You have no idea what we listen to. Anyway, I really like this, I'm all for finding new music!:) I am forever grateful to people who ibtroduce me to things I end up loving. I actually love people for that. Yay, I hope this happens.:D

    • Ha! I'll guarantee that I have some songs that not a single person on IIN has ever heard, bananadave. Stuff that never even got released. :P

I'm struggling now though to find things that are both good enough and obscure enough. I may have to sleep on it. :/

Would you not be able to share your favourites, which 99% of us haven't heard, Jennifer:P? Or is that not possible?:S

I'm not sure when something becomes obscure anyway. I don't think I have anything decent to share or something that someone on here hasn't already heard. Ah well, I hope someone does post a video that I end up liking. I'd love that.

        • Aww, I love it when you call me Jennifer. I'm honestly thinking of changing my real-life name. I was all brave about posting last night but one choice was a bit poncey and I thought people would post and say, "You're a ponce", another group was Polynesian and I thought people would post and say, "You dick! That's really well known in Australia" and another song was by someone who used to be more famous than he is now and I thought people would post and say "Pft! I've heard of him". I don't normally care what people accuse me of, but music is kind of important. I'm going to keep thinking. I will post something obscure but I want something good too. :P

But you've got a lovely real-life name! Anyway, I think you should post the poncey one:D. I've never thought of you as a ponce, it'll be funny! Please?:P

            • Okay, bananadave, for you it's ponce-music. I don't think many people will like this (although it was surprisingly popular on YouTube) but I kind of like it.

I like it, though. And so did Spacehog, apparently. They used it in "In The Meantime".

Old thread but thought I'd share some things anyway. I love hearing things that sound out of the ordinary.

Love songs that are loose in timing, a little off kilter.

I'm sorry for so many, but I'm really passionate about music. I hope someone enjoys these like I have.

  • I'd never heard of Forever Came Calling, but I like. The Wonder Years I like even more. I so rarely listen to punk or pop punk these days and there's no good reason for that. I do appreciate it. Makes for great gigs too. Really high energy.

I've not got into post-rock yet, although some of the bands I like were described as post-rock (Stereolab, especially, and Laika who I didn't really like as much - bought the album because of the Soviet cosmodog, Cul de Sac, and Mogwai). I keep meaning to give it more of a listen.

I'd never heard of Animals as Leaders but I love this track. I have no idea what genre that is (like you say). It's definitely prog but it seems be all kinds of other things as well. Hmm, thank you!

I'm really, really into pop punk. I think The Wonder Years are amongst my favourite bands ever. I saw them play in Nottingham, UK last year and they were fantastic fun. I probably prefer Less Than Jake (who I've also seen play live) slightly more, but they're hardly obscure enough for me to list them :) Pop punk is far too under-rated when it comes to having meaningful lyrics. I keep delving deeper and deeper into it, and it's easy to find great bands that aren't very popular at all, like Forever Came Calling.

Aye, post-rock is something I've not been into very long at all even though it's a sort of music I do very much like. I can hardly name any post-rock bands, but I should check out Stereolab :)

I love Animals As Leaders because their lead guitarist, Tosin Abasi, is a massive inspiration to me to learn music. Their music itself is very progressive and unique and innovative and every song is distinct despite not having vocals.

Also, if I may add another horribly obscure song and band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMIHSuKmGKA The Mountain Goats. There is no studio-recorded version of this track as far as I know, but to me it's ridiculous good.
