Is it normal to want to send you to the ward for add/adhd?

Is it normal the for a psychiatrist to want to send you to the hospital mental ward for having ADHD/ADD? My doc did when I came in one day. He says its fun like a camping trip. The man only talked to me for about 5 minutes each visit and each time up the pill dosage. This was a few years ago but I thought something was wrong with this picture. Has anything like this every happened to any of you?

  • What? That's impossible. That would be like sending someone to the ER for having a cold.

    Regardless, not normal.

It depends on what you mean by "ward". There are centres to help people with ADHD develop certain skills and learn to cope with their ADHD. If that's what he meant, then yes, it's fairly normal. Otherwise, not really. Did he say why he wanted you to go? Also, how old were you at the time?

    • 16 at the time. I am an adult now and it is the mental ward in the hospital. Usually they send kids who are suicidal or 5250. 5250 is danger to self and others. It a part of the hospital where they keep you tied to a bed and you can not move for a few days. No he just suggested it as a fun thing to do. He wanted me to volunteer. Kind of like trying to get a Jew to volunteer to go to concentration camp. It is a special section of the hospital.

I think you might be confused as to what a "ward" is. I have been in the mental ward... TWICE!

Once for suicidal behavior in which I volunteered to go, the second time was because I got caught doin' baaad things and my Mom was beating me senseless so I threatened to cut my wrist with a knife if she came near me after I got loose so she called the cops =/

Neither time have I been strapped to a bed, however, I spent most of my time in bed trying to sleep away the time because all there was to do was to watch old tapes, read old magazines and look out the window, save for meal time or group therapy or when the doctor would see you to adjust your dosage.

You're only "tied" to a bed if you go buck-fucking wild and assault the nurses. It's really not TERRIBLE. A lot of people get sent there when they experience serious problems with their mental illness and they need the time to get their shit together and get extensive help.

There's a possibility that your psyche saw that you wouldn't be able to get it together on your own and suggested you go there. Either that or you were telling him some shit he didn't feel like talking to you about so he decided to let it be someone elses problem.

Your analogy is horribly off. Mental wards are no where near what you envision them to be. Not to mention, many of them have outpatient services where you go in a few times a week, see a shrink, get a medication change and go to a group therapy session.

I used to think it was a fucking crazy hole too. The patients are all at a variety of severity though, from the person having issues that just needs the time to get it together to someone whose likely to be transferred to a long term care facility because there's no hope for them.

        • That is what the psychiatrist told me. He said "No big deal. They just strap you to a bed and you can not move. It is only for a few days". I also had friends who have been to one. That is what they reported. He never actually said all that much either. Just "Hello how are you today? Ok well I am going to up your dose by 5 grams." I just said "I am doing alright".

Huh. He must have been screwing with you then. It's not unheard of to have a Psych with a strange sense of humor.

Which country do you live in? I have never heard of a Psych ward (well, aside from ones where people who are mentally ill in a manner in which they are disabled by their illness... not like, depressed so much they can't leave the house but hallucinate murderers and shit), being ANYTHING like the way you described it.

            • It was not a trick. If he was kidding why would he push for it?

I have never had this happen to me. It sounds like your Dr. was just trying to get money from your insurance company. If you don't have insurance then I don't know why he would do this.
