Is it normal to want to say "fuck this half of my family"?

Recently my dad passed away and his last words to my family was a request to help my mom raise me and my sis... I'm 17 and in college and my sis is 18. After his request my father's half of my family "tries" to "help" my sister and I. I.e Taking all of my father's health insurance and final paycheck from work, my dad's collection of guns (which I can understand), indirectly insulting my mom/shutting her out of family events, and pretty much saying my mom's opinions don't matter when it comes to my sister and I and that only my grandparent's opinions matter. The only one who is actually bearable on my father's side is my grandpa, and he is trying to stay loyal to my grandma (the origin of all the hate, she just misses her youngest son and she put all the anger on my mom and my aunties and uncles follow her opinions). So I'll ask again, is it normal to say fuck this half of my family?

How could they just make those decisions anyway? I mean legally? I don't think your grandparents or any other relatives can decide anything for you if they don't have custody. From a legal perspective you, your sister and your mom have every right to say f**k that half of your family. Although I really hope your grandma comes to her senses.

Before people start helping themselves to your dad's stuff, there should be a will somewhere. Those who helped themself may very well be in serious violation of laws that are made to protect your dads property and estste and ensure it goes to where your dads wishes stated.

dude im the same way just way diffrent cicumstances my dad/his side of the family disowned me because of i was emailing guys on craigslist when i was 17 they got in my computer and had been monitoring me for months then they called me out on it and they had a proablem with me experimenting with my sexuality (which is only my business) but anyways they )i say they because my grandmother rules the family with an iron fist) allowed me to move back and i was like fuck them have not spoke a word to them in a year and live 4 states away and its was the greatest choice of my life. when you just stop fucking caring its very liberating to know that your are your own person that can do/go wherever the fuck you want. thats my story hope you figure shit out man good luck.

Sure. Sorry for the loss of your dad BTW. But yeah, why not keep you distance from the worse and stay connected to your mom and gramps.

PS - I don't get how they had gotten so much power. Normally everything would go to your mom as immediate survivor and next of kin and to you 2. No need to explain - but that does seem odd.

Its a shame, but death in families have this effect. There are the emotional and legal aspects and the human nature plays the biggest part. When it comes to greed, you should absolutely cut em loose even if it means losing a material possession, you owe them nothing (and now they know it) and a pox on their soul for not honoring a death bed request. You know who is there for you, and you'll be there for them when the time comes. I hate one side of my family with a passion but Im there for that parent. I love the other side but I know I can't trust that lot either. Loyalty is a one on one proposition. Honor your father, and the hell with the ones that don't.

  • Let it go. A race isn't won by looking at the affairs of those around you.
