Is it normal to want to reveal more personal details here?

I'm often tempted to reveal myself more on this site, with personal details that could identify me and/or tempt the trolls. I wonder if more honesty on this site is worth it: what do other users think?

Well maybe you should only reveal yourself to people who truly appreciate what you have to reveal?

  • I've given various information over the years. I wouldn't post my address, but I'm sure someone could even find that in the phone directory or back ground check if they really wanted and figured out my last name, which a few people here know because they are on my facebook.

There are certain very easy ways to find someone online if they reveal enough information.

Your last sentence is exactly what I'm concerned about, but then a do have a good security system and a guard dog if anyone did find out my address and try to harass me

        I. Don't. Fuck. With. You. Just kidding. Go for it, I wouldn't know if you were being truthful or not anyways. I don't really think there's much to lose to a bunch of strangers on the internet.

Worst case scenario, stalkers post you presents.
It would be like a fun lottery, is it an emerald encrusted anklet, or a small homemade sachet of semen?
    What fun!

HA, unfortunately I've never had the fortune (or misfortune) of either. But I've got to know people a bit better on this site through the chat and there's been nothing bad about that!

I debate this with myself too. Years back, I used to be more open on the site by the things I'd say (I never gave out things like my address or full real name), the links I would share and my email. But, now I worry about getting harassed or someone finding me offline or even someone who knows of my other profiles and finds me on here.

I'm not intending revealing my real name, address or email address on here, just more personal info which could confirm my identity to anyone who already knew a bit about me from elsewhere.

However, it sounds as if you weren't actually harrassed or found offline, am I right?

There's the thing, I don't know if anyone has tracked me down or recognised me offline. For instance, Flickr used to show the exact places photos where taken. I took some photos from my home and the map listed the street where I live. That was terrifying. Thankfully, it is no longer shown. But, it concerns me how many people might have drove by my house, hoping to see me.

I've inadvertently made enemies on here, that seem to love following my comments. I would consider some of it harassment but, they probably wouldn't.

Lol what. -You- have made enemies on here? I'm honestly surprised. I had to glance at your username again to know if it really was you. Unless you were being jestful or sarcastic when you said the enemies part? The little while I've been here, I haven't yet stumbled upon anything enemy-esque about you. I am soo confused and intrigued right now haha

Could care less I'd tell you anything other then my e-mail address. I don't think I have anything on the line using my real name so giving it out doesn't effect me just would not link it directly to an account.

I didn't mean my real name or address, I'm actually not sure what stops me, I think just fear that the more info I put on here the more recogniseable I might be to people I know.

I had a very bad experience recently of doing something in the media using another name and then being "outed" in a way which potentially put me in danger, so I'm wary but also wanting to be open and honest: it's a dilemma!

    • TrustMeImLying

Choose "open and honest," but do it at your own pace. Keep your address hidden for sure, lol, maybe disclose your first name? And maybe only in private messages with someone that you end up talking to? Or use another name or nickname if you wish.

But go for it, because there's a liberating feeling in not holding yourself back; speaking your mind, confessing whatever, with no strings attached to the real you. It's like the joy of sprinting naked in public with no one able to identify you!

Thank you! Open and honest at my own pace is a very good suggestion.

How would I be contacting people via INN in private messages anyway, without at least revealing an email address to them?

Love your last paragraph! thanks again ......

You're welcome. When you click on a user's profile there is a "Send message" button. But that function will only work if you or the person you want to message has "IIN gold." There are always a handful of users who have IIN gold.

Or idk, I think a few users put their email address on their profile too. You don't have to put your real email. You could create a new IIN-specific one and put that.

Well im not going to be able to guess.
not only will I forget random information about people ( I talk to a lot of people over the internet im not going to be able to remember all about you) but also there are too many people on this planet.

You can give out info about you without people being able to guess. Even if you only let them know what state you are from

Example I live in az ... I have a bf and a daughter... my fav food ever is pizza... how many people in az do you think there are... a lot... I dont think you would be able to find me without at least my name

You wouldn't be able to guess who I am, esp as you're obviously in the US and I'm not, but I guess I am being a bit paranoid, aren't I?

          A bit
but if you wanna talk paranoid I google myself just to make sure Google still has my wrong address so random people cant find me. Rofl
just dont name yourself or family members and I think you should be fine

True said awhile back that users IP addresses are visible. I'm not sure if they are visible all of the time or if only visible under certain circumstances. You should ask him about that.

        • Ellenna

Well I've never seen them, if by IP addresses you mean email addresses?

Are you absolutely positive about that? Because I would've thought if that were so most of us would be getting replies direct to our email addresses from other IIN users

          • Avant-Garde

IP addresses aren't the same as email addresses. They are the addresses of our computers and phones. They can be used to track people down. True says that they are visible. I've never seen them myself so, maybe they're only visible to Gold Members?
