Is it normal to want to pretend to have disabilities?

Let me start off by saying this is by no means for laziness or 'benefits' - I'm just curious.

It's not my INTENTION to offend people, but I just love acting like different people. I have many personas, in fact, most of which are still 'babies' (in the making).

I asked a question pertaining to this on yahooanswers, and I was flamed for it.

Then they started talking about Karma, blah blah "what if you really end up blind/wheelchaired/deaf/mute?!" Frankly, I don't care. I mean, I would, but eh, what'cha gonna do?

I'm just curious like, is it NORMAL for me to want to do this? The asshats down at YA thought not. Be honest, 'cause truthfully I see nothing wrong with it.

  • "Everybody knows you never go full retard.

    What do you mean?

Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded.

Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded.

Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no.

You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed..."

Oh man tropic thunder cracks me up.

Anyone seen 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?'? It has an oscar nominated performance from Leonardo Di Caprio - as the autistic boy Arnie. Really worth watching. It was one of Leonardo's first films.

I do this all of the time, but I don't do it for the sole purpose of pretending to have a disability.

I have a natural inclination for creative writing. The stories and "personas" that I am able to make up at the drop of a hat have impressed those that have seen it. I don't know why, but I like to explore my creative urges. I even experiment with telling stories from perspectives that I have seen throughout the course of my life, stories that I found interesting and that I would like to expand on and share.

I would hope that everyone that is on the internet understands that what they may be reading might not be 100% true and not to take the internet too seriously, or to at least do research before they put any *REAL* faith into what they read, but I can't help someone if they are so trusting and don't understand these common principals.

So I will vote normal. I too enjoy exploring the depths of my creativity in an anonymous fashion. I don't pity people who get easily offended by what they see on the internet. It's the internet, for fuck's sake. If humanity's oddities bother you, unplug the router, go to your room and don't leave it.

    • Oh, thank you. And hey well, the internet's basically a community anyways - the only difference from this and the Roman Forums from long ago is people flock to internet websites from all over the world.

Things sociably acceptable in Boston may be looked down upon in let's say, a part of California, England, Italy, etc.

Nice comment, I like how you mentioned your writing.

No. Can't say I've done THAT?! Can't say I'll be trying it, either. Ah well. Each to their own.

I don't think you'll get an accurate answer here either. The people on this site are usually open to anything.

I've done that before actually. I didn't want to tell her I wasn't interested and hurt her feelings.

      • Personally, as a girl, I'd much prefer somebody telling me he's not interested rather than gay.

        But that's just me.

I support all sexualities, gender classifications, etc., but it hurts me a little to know I'll never have a chance with somebody because of my gender.

But then again, that's one way to make sure she never goes for you again, ahaha.

if you were a reasonable, level-headed person, i probably wouldnt be so quick to be turned off by you.

but some women still think they have a shot, even if they are turned down. it adds to the fun for them i guess. pathetic if you ask me.

          • In the past I'd just moved on.

It troubles me when uh...'courting' a bisexual person though - I oft worry if he goes off thinking about being with another guy.

well if he doesnt want a woman then he shouldnt be leading you on. most bisexual guys i know are pretty monogamous.

As long as this is done for the right reasons I don't really see it hurting any body. If there is no financial gain, of special treatment to be drawn from it, i'd say go ahead. Just be sure to respect the disabled community in which you are portraying.

    • Yeah like, say if the elevator's crowded. I am NOT going to force everybody out, no, if completely necessary I can take the stairs. Not that hard.

Special parking? I don't like driving unless I'm carrying loads in 'my truck' - I prefer walking/biking, so I wouldn't trouble that.

Of course, haha, I respect strangers anyways - keeps the world a more peaceful place sometimes.

I hardly think you'd really like it if you were in the situation unless you has a surprising amount of self-awareness, social-skills/consideration of others and a realistic sense of consciousness of other people. But at the same time, I could see it might provide some depth too. Leonardo Dicaprio did really good at portraying a kid with mental disabilities in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' fantastic movie. Johnny Depp's in it too

    • Self-Awareness: not sure
      Social-Skills: conditionally
      Consideration of Others: highly
Realistic Sense of Consciousness of Other People: Stopped caring

Hmmm...I'll check out the movie online, thanks. I mean I'm not INTENTIONALLY trying to cause harm, I just want some obstacles once in a while.

Difference is in reality, when the persona's off, I have nothing I act.

The Lars von Trier film, "The Idiots", is pretty much a bunch of people who do this. The set up is that these otherwise able and intelligent people are pretty much trolling society. It's an interesting film. Nowhere near his best, but interesting.

There's a French film with a similar theme (but which gets to the moral point quicker) but I can't remember what it's called. I keep thinking Le Dîner de Cons, but I know it's not that.

I'm sure some kind person on IIN will let me know. My memory is knackered recently.

    • Ohh, I LOVE Diner de Cons! Such a hilarious movie.

But this is slightly different. I mean, you can tell somebody's stupid only by talking to them, but I'd be like, pretty noticeable in a wheelchair.

Nothing, really. Not sure if I said I like personas, and I like to act as if I were somebody else. I also like the idea of being restraint. If my life were harder in some way, you know?

My parents made the mistake of giving their children the EASIEST FUCKING lives possible.
