Is it normal to want to get off painkillers, but find it hard to?

I was in an accident a coupla years ago, and ive been on painkillers since- id like to stop, tried, and find it hard to. Is there a way, besides rehab, to go about this? I really dont have the time or money to get into a program!

I used to work in a package distribution warehouse, where painkiller abuse was rampant. Yeah, it's an addictive substance and it's normal to abuse them and want to stop. Do the detox thing, then get support for the emotional aspect; family, friends, support group, etc. Support groups are typically free, and comprised of people going through the same thing. NA or Celebrate Recovery if you're religious, SOS if you're not or don't want to bring religion into it. Don't worry too much about what the "right" support group is, other than what's right for you, since the scant data available suggests the success rate is equal across all of them.

  • Ask your doctor to prescribe you suboxone. It's what addicts get to stop. Just tell him you want to get off it and you heard suboxone works well. Whatever you do, do not get prescribed methadone it will be a lot worse if you get addicted to that.

Definately stop use gradually. Withdrawls from opiates like oxy-codone can be agonizing. The fact that you're taking more than perscribed indicates mental as well as physical dependency. Though it may hurt your pride, you may consider having someone you trust keep possession of the pills and dole them out in gradually smaller doses(over months) rather than attempt to curb usage on your own.

How addicted are you? Are you taking a lot of them at once, or as prescribed? Have you ever done any physio-therapy or intense stretching? What about saunas, hot-tubs, or massage-therapy? What about switching to weed, which is physically non-addictive, while you cut back on the painkillers?

Oh, and don't stop cold-turkey, otherwise you'll go into withdrawal. Cut back slowly while you manage your pain in other ways. Good luck. I hope you find some relief. :)

Quite a few per day, maybe a touch more than precribed, slowing down was pretty much my plan of attack- medicinal mj is definatly a good thing to help, the only problem is, i work 12-14 hrs per day, and i find being stoned(mmj) is kinda tough on the job, even with all these wonderfull new types of pot that dont put u down! Thank you for your advice, it solidifies my own thoughts!
