Is it normal to want to get a nose surgery (plastic surgery)?

I'm insecure about my appearance primarily because of my nose. It's on the larger side and my bridge has a bump and the tip is sort of bulb-like. Many people have called me cute, beautiful and said positive things about my appearance but I've always felt as if my nose is something that makes me uglier and nobody dares to say it straight to my face.
I'm not so worried about the size but its the shape that makes me paranoid. I hate having pictures taken of myself and I feel like it makes me look manly (I'm a girl)
Is it normal and acceptable to get a nose surgery? Will I be condemned as a shallow person if I get one?
I don't consider looks a high priority in my life but it's definitely something that affects my general happiness because of being judged by it in social situations. Iin?

It's your body. You should do what makes you happy, and only you can decide what that is. Some people feel better about themselves after getting plastic surgery, and some people don't. It might be a good idea to get counselling beforehand to help you decide if it's what you really want to do. Ultimately, your goal should be to love yourself, but you're allowed to use whatever resources are available to do that.

There is a bit of a stigma attached to getting plastic surgery, but it's nobody else's business.

Here's an article I really like by a woman who writes about positive body image, has had rhinoplasty, and doesn't regret it: http://www.eatthedamncake.com/2012/03/08/kates-against-plastic-surgery/

I think it's a really good, nuanced post about the issue.

Don't do it. All the plastic surgeries I've seen are disgusting looking. You might regret it!

I had three and I regret it. It was never right, now I have redness and a scar. I am a male.

I have a wide, bulbous nose. People sometimes mistake me for ethnicities that I am not because of it. I thought about "fixing" it a lot lately but then I realized that it's a cliche. So many people get their noses littler that I should save up my money for something more helpful or donate it instead of being a cliche. I hope that I can look good despite my light-bulb nose and be an inspiration to large nosed ladies who can't afford surgery.

It's normal, hell I know for myself and can totally relate to your insecurities. As well as have having quite severe acne that I despised, I also hated my nose. I mean, I still know it's big but what's changed is that it doesn't bother me anymore. Hell I can even say I like it now because on a guy it's considered masculine.

But before I thought it was ugly. Maybe you will even start to like yours. I know it will never be considered an attractive thing by society if a girl has a big nose, but society idea is screwed up anyway and thinks we're all attracted to the same thing. Nose job, blonde, blue eyes, slim, fake breasts.

I don't particularly find all those attractive when half the time they're fake. Society seems to put too much pressure on women to look "perfect". Nobody looks perfect, even people who have had plastic surgery, hell they're far less perfect looking now because if it's extreme they end up looking fake.

I don't think a nose job will change that much if that's all you want and you shouldn't look fake, but you could be even more unhappy with your new nose if you decided to go for surgery. Sometimes the new nose doesn't turn out the way they wanted it to look like or they're overwhelmed with a different nose, even the one they wanted, and want their old nose back.

I'm just telling you those things because the aftermath can be an issue and it will make you even more depressed, but who knows, with the right doctor, and normally it should all go well, you will have it done and feel more confident because you like your nose. Those are just the two possibilities. It's up to you. But just remember, it's only a nose. You might even grow to not mind it like I did.

Some one else in the world has a nose like you, so if you can live your nose and feel beautiful with your nose, they can too, and so can all the other people with noses like you. <3

    That is the way God made you. And he made you the beautiful way you are for a reason. You should embrace your nose! LOVE your nose!! Self acceptance is much better than trying to change yourself, the way you were born. We all have something unique about us. That's what makes you beautiful. Try to live yourself first, I mean really truly. =}

It's common to get plastic surgery. It's common for everyone to find SOMETHING about themselves they dislike. If you think rhinoplasty will truly help your anxieties, go for it (but beware the price tag.) But the less expensive, less painful route would be to learn to overcome those anxieties.

If you did get one and someone gave you crap about it, just cite medical reasons. A friend of mine had her jaw reset because she had trouble closing her mouth, so plastic surgery isn't uncommon for those types of things. Personally I never recommend it - will it be worth the pain, or will the anxieties just latch on to something else? - but then again its me, not you, and I don't even like the idea of coloring hair, lol.

    • I think it would help me in a medical aspect as well since I have a deviated septum, trouble breathing from it and headaches due to that. I think the bump on my nose is caused by an incident where I most likely broke my nose as well.

Well with medical issues from it, I would consider the pros and cons from a quality of life perspective rather than cosmetic. This would be a good discussion with your doctor - and you may even get insurance to cover it.
