Is it normal to want to cut off my emotions completely?

I've been wanting to box up my emotions and burn them. I see people react to things and I find it a bit pitiful. For example when someone gets pinched, they say "ow!". When someone hurts me physically, I barely acknowledge it even if it actually hurt me. Also, when you get a good grade on a test, you're supposed to be happy, right? And sad if you get a bad grade, right? And mad if someone says something rude to you, right? If people would treat me normally afterwards, I would very well not react to any of these. Although, sometimes I just can't repress these feelings because they are too strong. Speaking of which, I feel more emotions when I watch anime and when I read books (of course, anime and books that are... emotional, er, I'm not sure that's how you say it...) than in real life.
Is this normal?...what am I kidding myself, this isn't normal. -Rephrases sentence- What are your thoughts on this?

If it helps you get it out, allow it. Repressed emotions can cause health problems. I know I enjoy a good cry over a sappy movie every now and then.

I don't like crying... well no, it's not that I don't like crying, more like whenever I cry, for whatever reason I start to, I go on for at least an hour and I just can't seem to stop myself because I keep thinking about all the issues I presently have and how no-one is going to comfort me and say "it's okay" or "it'll be alright" and hug me and that fact just depresses me. No-one is there for me when I need them, but of course I try to be a good person and help others, but they never do anything for me in return... I feel like screaming at the top of my lungs...
And that is why I try to not cry too often; it does way more harm than good...

I am sorry you feel that way. I'd give you a hug.

I do the same... If you could enjoy feeling, I'd recommend not repressing, because It's gotten to the point where everything is gone. It's not entirely gone, but it is to the point I don't connect with, I feel for or even care about anyone or anything. But, if I were to stop repressing, I'd have a whole lot of pain to deal with, so it's better to deal with pain as it comes... I've actually begun to enjoy it, which isn't really healthy at all. But I couldn't stop, not now.

Oh my god, i feel like I've just read something out of my own journal....I have cut off my emotions when dealing with other people, but when it comes to stuff like anime, books, and things like this I can switch some of my emotions on. And I like it this way...even if I don't understand it :)

I always got shut down for my emotions. My family taught me that showing emotion is weak. My bf feels the same way and frowns up being happy, sad, or angry. In reality I am normal and i do feel emotions like excitement, sadness etc but on the surface I show no emotions. This really isn't healthy at all and people do notice. You should try to break out of this habit. I remind myself when I'm not around those people that I can be myself but it's hard.

I'm sorry your parents are doing that to you. They definitely shouldn't impose that way of thinking on you... I have no idea if it's a stage I'm going through but I feel exactly the same way as your parents. Somehow, I wish my parents did that to me... Wanna trade? :P

Repressed emotions might explode out of you someday! take care not to keep them inside, talk to your friends about this. They usually have good advice.

Also, find time to do things you love. It takes your attention away from your emotional troubles.

What kind of anime though? like Japanese anime? :O

You're right and I would have a long time ago but I practically don't have any friends, so that makes it impossible. :P
Yes. Japanese anime is just... amazing. ♥

  • Its not healthy to store all the emotion up. If you arent emotionless then you shouldnt try to be because it will only make you suffer in the end.

You're right. Although, I think emotions make life ten times harder than what it really is. :/

      • Without emotion I dont think we would of progressed so much as a species. It is a bad thing for the individual but a good thing for a society.

Bullshit... Emotions actually get in the way of thought and simply lead to more bad than good. Do you think that if we had less emotion, that any world war, crimes, or even most murders would have happened? Progress can happen by simple needs and has worked so far....

          • You think all wars were created by emotions rather than cold calculated attempts to power?

Why would you want power if you didn't feel like you needed it? A great deal of wars have been motivated by greed, and very few wars are used to gain power, but rather to assert power already there.
