    Teach wasn't his real name. Neither was Thatch, which he sometimes went by. They were both noms de plume because he was a criminal and needed another identity. I think his real name was Edward Drummond. Fascinating man, though.

    If you're interested in this period of history (and I very much am), it's worth reading about what William Dampier got up to. He died in the same year Drummond was born and is an utterly astonishing man. As well as his adventures (which are pretty great themselves), his influence is everywhere in the English language and literature.
