Is it normal to want something so bad?

Is it normal to want something so bad, but know that you will probably never get it? Because I really want to, some day, be a famous author. But right now I know that I do not have the writing skills to do so. I imagine the stories in my head but whenever I go to write them down it sounds like a 6th grader wrote it. Are there any other aspiring authors out there? Or already successful authors? If so, do you have any tips or hints, besides going to school, that could help me improve my writing skills?

  • Talent is overrated. If you spend enough time on something you can do it. Just grind hard. Dont be a bitch.

All you need is pen and pad...find an editor who loves editing...you are an artist and your words become a head, torso and limbs..the editor just gives it the breath it needs to survive...you are young but you can achieve it even now...don't hold back...since you are still in High School ask your Language Arts teacher to go over some of your stuff...this could be an independent study that could increase your grade and challenge yourself use websites...the internet is at your diposal so the sky is the limit...I am so proud of you..good luck and start submitting some of your work in excerpts to local newspapers or on fb and myspace...you would be amazed......use this site to broaden your vocabulary http://dictionary.com/...

If you want it so bad then don't give up on it.

The "famous" part, that you might want to give up on; what makes a writer famous is nearly always luck. Stephanie Meyer, J.K. Rowling, and Stephen King got famous because they were lucky enough to write what wound up being popular.

Just because you suck at writing *now* doesn't mean you can't improve. No one EVER writes a good first draft. And also, mind that there are many different writing styles. If your story does sound "like a 6th grader wrote it," that isn't always a bad thing. Many great books have very simplistic, straight-forward narration styles. "Dan Brown's" writing style sounds like a teenager wrote it, but his stories are so much fun that his fans don't care.

Just keep writing your stories, and keep working on improvement. You can get published. You probably won't get famous, but that doesn't mean you should throw your dream of writing away. An author once told me online, "As long as you have fun writing your story, someone else will have fun reading it."

Try some poetry or short stories. Try writing about experiences that you've had; writing a book is not easy.
And writing takes a lot of inspiration, too. Write about something you really care about.

Black127 is right. I'm in the same boat as you only that I'm majoring in Creative Writing--it's a great experience; you get to workshop and receive peer criticism. You're still in HS, still young--relax, if you really put yourself into it, you can achieve your goal.

I know a guy who is working his way to becoming an author. He spends an awful amount of time on it, like twenty hours a day. As far as I can see from him, you need to read everything and write as much as you can. You have to give up everything else, really. At least that's what he does. And his stuff is totally amazing now. he gets better all the time. I don't see him much though!
