Is it normal to want nightmares for writing inspirations?

Sometimes I listen to disturbing music, look at creepy images, or watch scary movies before my sleep in order to get nightmares. I never remember my dreams well, but whenever it's frightening or haunting, it inspires me in my poetry and story work. I wish that I could have nightmares more often in order to achieve that inspiration. Is it normal?

Inspiration comes in sorts of different ways. I once had a nightmare and I used it as the story for a novel. In fact most of my novels come from dreams.

At 16, I had spectacularly frightening dreams revolving around a cathedral entirely made of glass and known as The Catafrax. The horrors and torture of each room were witnessed by those being tortured in each other room, making the whole thing a feedback loop of rising dread. People were rotated around the rooms meaning they always had a very visible demonstration of what was coming next, while simultaneously reliving past trauma and also being tortured in some new and horrible way. The panic response of everyone in the cathedral was hard-wired together meaning only one person had to go over the edge and everyone else went with him. At the centre of the cathedral was a glass bed big enough only for your back. Your limbs hung off it and twisted mechanicals periodically used chainsaws to simultanously cut one inch from the extremity of each limb. When you appeared close to passing out through pain, they woke you by taking another inch until your arms and legs were down to stumps. If I stayed asleep long enough to lose all my limbs, the chainsaws came for my face.

If anyone wants to use any of this in a novel, by the way, promise me you'll give me an acknowledgement.
