Is it normal to want a higher i.q. than your girlfriend?

I had an ex-girlfriend who was amazing in school, and did great with test taking. To her, the I.Q. test was very important. When she asked me what my I.Q. was, and I didn't remember, she convinced me to take a test. I didn't take it too seriously. Needless to say, I scored much lower than her, which kind of made me feel inferior...

I feel like that I.Q. test was pointless because no matter who was higher, someone would end up feeling a little dumb and it did not really prove anything. She took the approach of saying it's our society's fault that I felt bad for scoring lower than her, but I felt like it was normal as a guy to want to score higher than a girl, regardless of the test, not misogynistic or anything.

You say you feel like the test was pointless, if that is the case why does it matter whether your future girlfriend's IQ is higher lower or the same as yours?
I too did not get a particularly good score on the IQ test, and was irritated at first when some of my classmates, who seemed to have the brains of apes, scored noticeably higher than me. But the IQ test only measures short term memory, reasoning and verbal agility, not common sense, ability to prioritise or creativity so there's no need to feel inferior for having a low score.
Feeling jealous, and even resentful of the girl for scoring higher than you is normal but feeling that you should have scored higher simply beacuase you're a boy is riddiculous.

I don't believe in IQ, you could give me a test full of stuff I know and I could score higher than Stephen Hawking or you could give me a test of shit I don't know and I'd score as well as a rock. You could study for an IQ test, you can't study for life.

Best piece of advice my Father ever gave to me. "Son, dont form a relationship with a woman smarter than yourself."
Luckily that only omits 5% :)

Tests have indicated my IQ to be somewhere around 135-140, and I can honestly say that intelligence is not something I would look for in a girl. If she is "smart", then so be it, but I would not choose or discard someone because of mental capacity. That said, if she was really clueless it would be a different matter.

Nobody wants to feel inferior, especially to the person they're in a relationship with.

But measurement of IQ is in no way a perfect science, and the result doesn't define what kind of person you are, how successful you'll be, it doesn't express all your positive attributes at all. So I really wouldn't let it weigh you down.

Everyone is better and worse at something than the person they're with. It's inevitable. If intellectual disparity was an issue between you two, you probably wouldn't be together :)

Maybe you're just quite competitive. It's understandable to feel this way but ultimately, it's better if you can just move on from it. And what your gf says about societal pressures probably has some truth to it - there's a stereotypical idea that men should have that edge when it comes to 'intelligence'. But that's outdated and too simplistic. I'm sure you're both intelligent but perhaps in different ways. Together, you have much varied intelligence...? Another way of looking at it.

My first wife was stupid as a stone and we had a great deal of fun together for 10 years, but there was little intelligent conversation in the relationship. My second wife was very intelligent and we also had a lot of fun together, but we also had a lot of fun discussing everything from the infinity of space to how stupid others we met were. That lasted about 14 years, but ended as the first did, because she realized she wasn't going to change me (being a sea captain and adventurer) while all she wanted was the white picket fence and me in a 9 to 5 job.
