I think this normal ... at least it happens a lot in the movies. It's never happened to me though.
My partner deals with this exact problem, and told me when we first got together out of embarrassment. Said it was when he had a nightmare as well. It did scare me a little the first or second time, but as we've been next to each other for almost two years, I've adapted to reaching over and holding him in my arms and telling him it's okay- just a dream..and he goes right back to sleep. Sometimes he doesn't even remember the nightmare, just the scream!
I've had this happen a few times, but only within the span of about a month. However, I wasn't screaming, I was yelling incoherent nonsense.
It was a VERY stressful time. Sounds like you're going through something similar.
However if this occurs frequently for an extended period of time, you might want to see a sleep disorder specialist.
