Is it normal to wake up hungry?

I have a pretty weird work schedule. I wake up at 3am so that I can be at work at 4am. I usually don't eat breakfast until my 6am break. And then I have a snack on every break after that, they come at 2hr intervals. It goes like this...

6am - Shake (Carnation or otherwise)
8am - Banana or Yogurt
10am - Lunch, usually Cottage Cheese or Meat and Crackers
12:30pm - Fruit

Then I get off of work and I usually have something sweet. Then at about 5 or 6 I have dinner, and go to bed about 7 or 8. Lately I've been waking up just ravenous. I don't want to eat though, I feel like I'm already eating enough! I usually just try to sate my hunger with coffee, but sometimes it doesn't work. Is it normal to wake up hungry? I never have before, I've usually had to break my fast before I started feeling hunger.

you just need more meat.or someting more filling seriously what kind of diet is that unless you're losing weight but still I don`t see anything thats really filling during the day you can tell your stomach that its fine and probably don^t feel hungry but when you sleep and wake up your stomach is like OMFG!

It takes the longest to digest, and provides your body with alot of nutrition to run off of. Thus making you full longer, and your cells run properly.

    • I never have eaten much meat. But yes, I eat this way because of my weight. But I've been eating this way for over a year. I have a little meat with some lunches and some dinners, but it's not every day.

I used to work 7pm to 9am two or three days a week and I can sympathise with you. I was living at home so still had to fit around family mealtimes. Waking up at 5pm and having a full Sunday lunch for breakfast was weird enough. So was everyone eating their breakfast the next day while I was having a beer and getting ready for bed.

Because I didn't do it five days a week, I never got into a routine like yours. But still, it was hard. I was always either hungry, overly full, or had indigestion and heartburn.

In your case, your regime of small, regular "meals" seems sensible to me. What I'm actually wondering, though, is whether you are thirsty. The body's signals for both hunger and thirst are easily confused. Especially if you're using coffee (a diuretic) to either stem hunger or to stay awake at strange hours.

    • I do a really physical job, so I tend to drink water throughout the day. Lately I've been drinking more caffeine than usual though, so that could be it. I'll have to make myself drink more water and see if that helps.

If you eat slow-burning carbs at dinner then they should last you over night so you're a little less hungry in the morning. Whole grain is a good example. 8 hours without any food, even when you're in a restful state (asleep), still requires energy - you still burn calories simply by being alive.

If you're body is telling you you're hungry, unless you have a health condition that interferes with your metabolism, it's because your body is running low on something it needs. It's normal to be hungry in the morning to a certain extent, but if you feel like you're starving then that's not quite right.

It's great that you eat a lot of fruit but your body uses it quickly. Try adding nuts to your diet.

  • If the last thing I ate was at 6PM then yes I'd be ready to eat my own arm at that point.

    • 6pm to 3am isn't abnormal. Most people eat dinner at 6-8pm and don't get up as early as I do.
