Is it normal to very, very rarely brush your teeth?

I'm 18, in college, and I brush my teeth maybe once every 4 months or so. It's almost always just the day of a dentist or orthodontist appointment. I haven't brushed my teeth regularly since very young childhood. I have regular appointments with my dentist and orthodontist (recently got braces off). I always lie to the dentist and tell him I'm brushing every morning and every night, and he always checks them and says they look great. I haven't had a cavity in many years.

I don't eat candies/sugars often (other than sodas and tea), although when I do I usually eat a lot. I'm a big fan of chicken, beef, other meats, breads, etc. My teeth just rarely get buildup, and when they do, I just scratch a bit of it off with my fingernail. I'm starting to feel like the entire field of dentistry is a crock... lol... Or perhaps I have a very bacteria resistant mouth.

Is it normal?

I've never been told my breath stinks, and my parents are quite upfront about such things. lol. I sometimes chew gum. I almost always chew the ice from my drink after a meal, maybe that has to do with it.

I rarely brush my teeth. Maybe only every few weeks, or if I've had something staining/sugary/creamy, etc.
I've extremely healthy teeth, never had a cavity in my life. I do drink water regularly (which is probably more than most of you, you self-claimed Saints), and chew gum or swish with mouthwash when I'm cautious of breath, which I've never had issues with.

You don't get bad breath from not brushing. Bad breath doesn't get caught up in, or even caused by plaque and build up. It's in your throat, which you'll have a wonderful time trying to fix just by brushing the front three inches of your mouth.

I'm English, born and bred, so your so-oft-disproven theory is wrong.

Same hygiene as this guy but my teeth are perfectly white. I have no problems with my teeth. I've got a family friend that is a dentist and he checks my teeth often. I haven't had a cavity in years and I don't brush regularly either. I brush maybe every 3-4 months with no Problems of halitosis or the like.

It kind of makes sense that brushing too often could be as harmful as not brushing enough. Brushing too hard / often could be stripping away enamel.

I've been thinking recently that toothpaste is an irony. It's sweet, and we're rubbing it on our teeth though dentists tell us to stay away from sweets..weird? O_o

It would be ironic, if toothpaste had SUGAR in it.

I know it doesn't actually have sugar in it, I just find it a little ironic is all.

I'm a girl, and I brush my teeth twice daily and use Chrest white strips (Because I'm paranoid that people will think that my teeth are yellow, or my breath smells bad) But as a child, I brushed my teeth every month or so, and I was the only person in my family who had never had a cavity. Sometimes I would have a toothache, and I'd brush my teeth really well for about three days being scared that I had a cavity. The pain always went away though, and I never had any tooth problems. Just chew sugar free gum and use mouthwash. You should be fine :)

My granny had started brushing her teeth when she was around 50. She's 76 now and has no cavities and all her teeth are pearly white and strong. I've read some articles about some tribes that never brush their teeth and they have no cavities whatsoever. Some of them chew some herbs. An Indian friend told me that his family also never brushed, just chewed cardamon and some home made chewing gum, made with cloves, beeswax and some other spices.

Kurt Cobain apparently never brushed his teeth, he just ate apples. Which in a way does make sense because when you eat an apple with its peel, the peel seems to get rid of plaque and polish your teeth.

Do you floss or use a water pick? How are you getting what's in between your teeth out?

I actually agree with the story. I don't have a regular brushing habit. All of my friends are blunt especially my wife. The last time I went to the dentist i had NO cavaties. I get compliments from my wifes friends boss whom is a Dentist actually that I have a very nice smile and mouth. but i probably brush once in the morning. If I remember I will at night but I've noticed brushing like 2 or 3 times per day doesn't really help anything it seems to make my teeth darker instead of whiter. Kinda odd but the truth.

Ive English and I have very clean healthy teeth too, but this is because I brush them and visit a hygeinist. Maybe the stereotype stems from somewhere, however, as my sister didn't brush her teeth for a week and couldnt understand why they looked disgusting lol.
    Just some thoughts.
Also don't scrape plague out with your fingernails. That's really gross. You probably eat it from your nails afterwards. Just go see a hygeinist.
Also never kiss anyone (unless they're my sister.)

Same for me. I'm quite ashamed about it, cauz it's a social normal to brush your teeth and all....but, for the rest, its not really a problem for me. My breath smells good and my teeth are .....okay. I do have some damages on my teeth, but thats from the times I was eating a shitload of candies. Now, my diet is very healthy and free of refined sugar.

I did the same for 6 years, ended up with 7 cavities, 2 of which were wisdom teeth which I had removed.

You should brush your teeth twice a day. Sugar free gum makes the mouth produce more saliva that, (believe it or not), actually helps kill a lot of bacteria, especially the ones that cause bad breath. Baking soda is good to use for your teeth, but is one of the more common causes of canker sores along with high acidic things and more. Take care of your mouth, even if it can be a pain.

Chewing sugar free gum will help fight cavities and keep your teeth healthy and your breath fresh. I've also pondered the irony of toothpaste.

I'd say you should at least brush once a day, even if it's not with toothpaste. Just do something to keep the plaque from building up. I think bacteria will eventually destroy your teeth!
