Is it normal to use pets and kids for avoidance?

I don't like talking to people or making much visual contact with those I am stuck talking to. When put in a situation where I have to talk to/be around people, if there's a pet or child around I will become overly attentive to it and use it as an escape and for an excuse for not making much eye contact. IIN?

Kids and animals are much more interesting than most adults. For example, I would much rather listen to a four year old talk to me about bugs, flowers, ice cream, dinosaurs and puppies than say listen to this one awful ex female friend complain to me about how obsessed she is with some married guy because she's a pathetically lonely creeper. The four year old will win hands down every time. I would much rather look into the baby blue eyes of my Siamese cat who's always got something interesting in works or wants to play fetch than feign interest while some self absorbed douche bag brags about himself and whatever bullshit he's up to. I'm the person at the party who shows up in dress clothes and makeup but still gets down on the floor with the dogs and cats. I'm 43 years old now, which is hardly elderly but I'm old enough to know I prefer to focus on fun, happy, interesting stuff instead of a lot of the boring, self obsessed drama that passes for socializing with many so called adults!
