Is it normal to use alcohol as remedy for sociophobia?

Hi. I am not an alcoholic, i don't normally drink and rarely get drunk, BUT, when confronted with social situations of moderate to high importance - interview, oral exam, reunion, party, etc. i feel like i need to drink; not a specific amount, 1 shot would do, enough to melt the ice. It's probably a bad sign, but it works. IIN?
PS. please don't tell me i need to see someone.

Talk to a psychiatrist... while drunk.

To be honest, using any drug as a crutch is a recipe for disaster. Especially alcohol, which is a depressant, and liable to make your symptoms more severe over time (and thus require more alcohol for the same effect).

I'm not going to tell you to "see someone" but please be careful and weigh up what you are doing.

i was glad to read this because i am exactly the same. aslong as you control you're amount and obviously not get drunk all the time, i don't see a thing wrong with it. i get pretty nervous when in social situations and a shot or five always takes the edge off.

Being an alcoholic does not mean you drink every day from the time you get up from the time you go to bed, kind of like what I did. An alcoholic is just someone who depends on it for certain situations, kind of like how I started.
...Not saying you are an alcoholic, but feeling the need to drink is the definition of one, even if you dont feel the need ALL of the time. So, be careful.

Most people who drink do it to enjoy themselves socially but some people cross a line and dont learn to socialize any other way then it becomes a big problem.

Alot of people drink alcohol as a means to overcome social anxiety, but that's where it could lead to a problem in the future.

Yes, alcohol does make you more confident, but it's too easy to become dependent on as well.

It sounds like you need to change the way you feel by drinking alcohol. This is the one thing all alcoholics have in common. This does not mean your an alcoholic but you definitely show signs of one. Only you can decide if your an alcoholic.

LOL you don't need to see someone but you do need to stop relying on alcohol. The fact that you only need one shot to build your confidence says a lot, you seriously do not need it and the more you try to deal with these situations without it the more you will realise...you damn alchy =)
