Is it normal to turn the doorknob while shutting the door behind you?

I have a couple in-laws living with me and my wife and the way they shut doors behind them drives me nuts. I was taught to not let the door slam shut behind me by keeping the knob turned while closing the door. The way these people walk through the house swinging doors shut behind them, letting the doors slam into the door frame, is enough to make me want to twist some heads off. Is this normal?

So you are not upset you shut it but that it slams? Yes it is normal to be upset since your house mates or house guests are noisy.

It is really bizarre how basic rules of decency somehow completely miss individuals and even entire families. Living in a house of door slammers must be hell. Ask them politely about it first. If that does not work, go into a rage. Sometimes it is the only thing that works.

Oh me too! I do what you do. I taught my kids that way. Sometimes when it's windy outside and I have the windows open, the wind will slam a door shut. Very irritating. But no one to get upset with.

Maybe you should start slamming the doors and see if it annoys them. They might learn their lesson!

Yeah you're right, its polite to not make noise and respect the doors and the house by turning the handle as you shut it.
