Is it normal to throw up from crying too much?

My son Samuel (age 5) and his identical twin brother James are super-worried about something school-related, and often stay up half the night screaming and crying in my husband's arms.
A couple of nights ago, John(husband)'s older brother Kevin stayed the night to try and soothe the situation a little -my sons really love him; he's a lawyer and James wants to follow in Uncle Kevin's footsteps, so they adore him. But the second night (Kevin agreed to stay on until the little 'uns stopped getting upset) Samuel cried so much that he began to cough.
We rubbed his back, but he gagged a few times and John scooped him up (still gagging) and took him to the bathroom. Kevin, James and I heard him being violently sick a few seconds later. When he had finished, John and I helped him drink a little water and wipe his mouth with a tissue.
Afterwards, he seemed fine. It was by now dawn, and Kevin missed an important case - so unfortunately didn't want to stay the next night.
But John and I have since been more than a bit worried about the twins - Samuel actually threw up (John said humourously that I shouldn't bother feeding them if my efforts just splash back into the bath!).

So is this normal? For a 5-year-old to actually vomit from crying/screaming?

Are they scared of the romans?

Anyway, I say it's fairly normal. Most of it is usually mucus, but vomit can be present. I've never gotten sick from crying save the mucus part, though...

Yes, it's all that Roman stuff again. I'm not sure if therapy's the best option to cure it, either. Sometimes I think kids just need to take a bit of a break, so John and I are letting them sleep with us for the time being.

As for the sickness, I think that Samuel's crying might have not only made him bring up mucus, but also throw up from nerves, too.
I certainly know that James was crying until his brother felt better.

      My special little guys...

What school related stuff are they worried about that made one of them cry and vomit?

Instead of weeping, give 'em lots of love and everything will be fine before you know it!!

Absolutely normal. Don't worry about it and whatever you do, don't mention it in front of him - or he will use it to distress you, by doing it again and again. Kids love to find your weakness and use it against you. It's just coz of mucus and the choking, very very common.

I'd a toddler who used to head-butt the wall when angry :o((

      Thanks!

I was very worried, he's never thrown up from crying before.

I don't think he'd actually get sick by trying to distress me, he has his heart set on being a doctor (James a lawyer - he's the cunning one!) so he tries to take care of his body...and other people's too! When we all came down with a sickness virus last winter, he begged to watch John throwing up - just for 'experience'. Bless him.

Yeah, he was crying so hard that night - I guess he couldn't keep any more down. John said that he mostly brought up phlegm at first, before vomiting up his food. Poor wee soul!

Thank God it wasn't a virus...if one twin gets ill, so will the other!

Yes it has just been the mucus so don't worry.

But don't every underestimate wee rascals, once they know what buttons to push - you are defeated ;o)

Don't know how he could bear to watch someone being sick - yuck!!!

True - they are little wee devils at times!

I know, how could ANYONE watch someone being sick? It's disgusting! Yuck indeed! I mean, John always helps the twins throw up by rubbing their backs or supporting their stomachs, but Samuel wanted to watch out of choice! Perhaps he'll be an intestinal surgeon or something! Ugh...

The whole reason for their crying is down to this whole Roman crap, my brother in-law (the lawyer one) says we may be able to sue the Irish education system, but I don't see how that helps the kids.

I guess time can heal all manner of great wounds.

            Those pesky Romans again!!!

Get down to the school and tell them what's happening and you want your kids withdrawn from any classes mentioning flippin' Romans. Other people have their children excused from religious classes that they don't agree with.

There is absolutely no way your children should suffer in this manner for the sake of learning about dead soldiers!! That is sooo awful.

Definitely speak to the school - this is ruining their wee lives :o((

I know! They've already been removed from history until the next school year (September) and I'm pretty sure the topic is dropped other times. I had a nosy round their classroom and there weren't any Godforsaken pictures of the Romans lurking in closets, but Miss Connolly has a very over-confident manner of assuring certain superiority.

John and I have been twice to the school (they were wondering why the twins kept missing days because of lack of sleep) and naturally we explained, but I don't think they realise what we go through at night, even when we explain. For some reason, it all comes down to my having them at 18. According to them, anyway.

John's getting really pissed off with it all, he came down with an upset stomach due to the stress, and he looks quite dismal most of the time (exept when the children are around, he's happy if they are, and they are in the day).
I suppose I'm quite lucky to have AS regarding my emotional reactions - if the whole family get sad, I stay pretty chipper.

Yep nieces did this a few times as infants. One of them use to cry in such a way that she couldn't breathe and even passed out for a few seconds.

I couldn't say whether Samuel choked or not; I was outside comforting James - but it seems that way!

I have laughed so hard that I threw up. It went from laughing to coughing to gaging to choking to puking. I hate to admit that has happend to me more than once.

Ew! I bet cleaning up wasn't fun though! I know John certainly didn't like donning rubber gloves and bleaching his son's puke out of the bath!
