Is it normal to think you're a really good singer?

I always think my voice sounds good when I sing, however I get told it's rubbish by lots of people, which means it must be true.

So why does my brain trick me into thinking I can sing! Anyone else feel like a better singer than the actually are?

I knew someone who thought they had the better singing voice than anyone else they knew. This person figured she'd become a rock star or and opera singer. Problem was she had the most horrid voice anyone around her had ever heard.
Apparently our ears (or our brains) can be very deceiving.

I auditioned in American idol in 2005 and I made it but they didn't let me go on the second time. I was really good I thought but I guess not good enough.

i sound so good when im singing in the shower, but then when im around people i sound tone deaf. So maybe it is either what kdblueeyes said or maybe you are just nervous around people and dont perform as efficiently as you do when you are alone.

You hear your voice differently in your head then when it is recorded or how others listen to it. I have the same problem or I did until I listened to a recording.
