Battle Royale, right down to the couple winning the game.
I didn't know that movie but I'm not surprised.
Many american movies are rip offs of European an Asian films. The most famous would have to be "The Departed", but there's a ton of them. For example whenever there's a successful french comedy I know the Hollywood remake will be out next year. It will be exactly the same but with a lot less soul.
I think the reason is that America doesen't seem to dub movies so much. In Germany almost every movie from anywhere in the world gets professionaly dubbed.
Whereas Americans, when they don't want to read subtitles, just seem to remake the entire movie. More money for everyone.
It is, but I think it's good they done an English version, although it wasn't as good an arena as Battle Royal.
In all honesty, I'm kind of annoyed and shocked that people automatically go on the bandwagon that "Hunger Games is RIP OFF OF BATTLE ROYALE! HOLY SHIT!".
Since when in hell did a Japanese novel that was made into a movie get so popular with the regular people of the internet? I expect otaku would know this since it was also made into a manga, but when the hell did the regular public know about a JAPANESE novel/film/manga?
I didn't see a lot of people comparing Black Swan to Perfect Blue or Inception to Paprika (Both films were released the SAME YEAR and both of the anime films were done by the SAME DIRECTOR) when the two films came out a couple years ago.
When did the internet suddenly pay attention movies and books being rip-offs of overseas stuff???
The loose and incomplete film-adaptation that came out is very similar to Battle Royale.
The book series is radically different and incomparable beyond the first book.
So.. I'm not sure if it's a full "rip-off". Maybe the idea that started it all was, but the movie came out after the complete series was written, so the movie itself is just a side-effect of the book. Lots of famous stories use borrowed ideas as a catalyst to develop into something unique.
I don't understand all these comments that seem to be based on the notion it was only ever a screenplay...
No, it's totally different, for example the characters have dumber names in the Hunger Games.
I haven't seen HG but I love BR. I will take your word that it is a rip off. The premise seemed similar to me.
Aaah yes one of my favourite films. I think the best bit is when the girl puts poison in Shuya's food and then one of the girls dies and they all blame each other.
That's human nature right there.
