Is it normal to think that progressive rock is severely underrated?
I think that progressive rock might be the most tragically underrated genre in the history of music. I mean sure, there are quite a lot of prog fans online and a large website dedicated to the genre (ProgArchives) but apart from this, the genre rarely gets any mention or praise from general rock fans, and if you ask a random person online to list their favourite rock bands, they will very rarely mention any progressive rock bands, and if they do mention one, it's almost always Pink Floyd (yes, they are a prog band but they are often lumped into the "classic rock" genre).
I don't want to sound like I'm bitching about this but it really saddens me because progressive rock bands are extremely talented and diverse in what they can do, and it makes me feel sad that millions of people don't even know what it is. Progressive rock deserves so much better in my honest opinion. I mean, the genre of metal gets a ridiculous amount of praise for being really complex and artistic, but progressive rock, which is far more complex and artistic in every way, seems to not exist to many fans of music. And a lot of people who DO know what it is, think it's music for hipsters, snobs and nerds. It makes my blood boil when people say this.
I just don't get it - how can a genre with so many exceptionally talented bands in it be so underground? Is it normal to think this, and does anyone agree? Sorry if there's too much text by the way, I know a lot of people here hate large paragraphs.
