Could anyone pull off the Joker better than he did? No. And the Joker was the hardest character to actors.

He was good. But surely he wasn't objectively "the best". I've seen amazing, mesmerizing performances by many actors form many ages. I don't think any one actor is "the best". Look at classical parts like Hamlet who's been played by thousands of different actors. Two different men may play him exceptionally well, yet their performances look nothing alike. Acting is an art form like painting or singing - You can to some degree mesure the technique, but you can never mesure it's soul.
Such a dumb post. Seriously. Look the guy did a fine job as the joker...but he hardest of all time. Grow up. Until you know what kind of work goes into having an acting career...maybe don't post on the subject. Silly. Just silly.
To be honest, and I don't want to sound mean, but he died at a good time. Because he did play the joker exceptionally well. Kind Kurt Cobain'd it and died when his career was doing very well. As for being the best actor, I've only seen him as the joker and that's just one movie, so I'm not going to say he was the best actor ever.
He was good in that role, but james stewart or gregory peck had more decorated careers over a longer amount of time.
Oh James Stewart had such a screen presence, I remember seeing rope for the first time, blown away. And it's a wonderful life of course
Yeah he had screen presence alright.
OP, I don't wish to take anything away from Heath Ledger because I think it's wonderful that he is regarded so highly in some circles. He hails from my hometown in Australia, we have a theatre here named after him. I was actually working out at the airport as a freight clerk when his body was flown home to be cremated and his ashes scattered at Cottesloe Beach, his favourite beach. There were throngs of media at the airport of course for his arrival. They sent out a decoy, an empty coffin in a hearse which the media all followed while the real coffin containing Ledger's body was collected in private by his grieving family.
To me Heath belongs to a different class of actors. His rise up the ranks of Hollywood was exciting and he died at the peak of his career. I could compare him to River Phoenix (although River was very good from a very young age.) I think there is glorification and romanticism when a young actor dies at the peak of his career, as opposed to an actor who has had a solid career over three decades plus then faded into old age and obscurity.
Call me old fashioned, but I just can't look past the screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood when people ask me who I think is the best actor in history. Of course the question is broad and there would be many great theatre actors as well.
Well, he was incredible in that role....and he had big shoes to fill because of Jack Nicholson...Nicholson was phenemenol too...but Ledger killed it...it was definitely the best Joker...and the best actor that year...unfortunately....it takes more than one role to be the best actor....and his other performances were good but not great
He drew kudos for Brokeback Mountain while he was still alive, he would of drawn raves as the Joker while still alive. His death probably lead to the Oscar for this role, but this is a totally subjective question anyway and dying is not the sole reason he was raved about. Paul Walker is not going to win an Oscar for the Fast and Furious films just because he died. Personally I think it would be hard to find a better actor than Daniel Day Lewis.

The joker was just a rip off of Tommy the cat.
Usually people get more kudos for their work after they have died prematurely. Vincent Van Gogh is a good example. I remember when Michael Jackson died. All the people who were originally MJ haters who called him a pedophile and whatnot all of the sudden became huge Michael Jackson fans after he died. It really shows just how fickle some people can be. I am not saying the majority are like that but that is just what I observed when that ordeal happened.
