Is it normal to think that 90% of modern music is really bad ? ...

Simply, i think that 90% of modern music is awful and 99.9% of all chart music should have never been written, if you can call it writing. It seems that a lot of successful music groups are corporate scams to make money (the saturdays anyone? The wanted?) and they don't actually have any bona fide talent. I know this seems very harsh and many people will like the money grabbing a**holes music but I haven't really met many people who think like me and i was wandering if there were any out there? I would choose an afternoon of David Bowie/The Smiths/ The kinks records over an afternoon of trying to decider what 50 cent is saying about his 'bitches' any day. Anyone with me?

I think it is normal, but i don't agree 23

The vast, vast majority of all music ever created is terrible. We just let time do the work of filtering out and letting us forget all the forgettable "artists". In time a good portion of today's terrible music will be forgotten just like it always has.

      correction
"vast majority of all music" made for money, not fun "ever created is terrible"

  • Most modern music is about the "scene" and not the "sound".

It's not modern music, it's all music, you don't think a lot of music was a corporate scam in the 60's or the 80's?

I know. Most of the music today really suck's and isn't even close to what I would consider talent.

It's kinda complex really. If you look back at the 50's, almost every band/singer that came out was a brief one hit wonder save for a couple, so essentially you could say the same thing about the good 'ol days. Out of all modern music history, there's really only very, very few acts that are remembered even as short as a few years after they debut and even fewer that last beyond a decade. So, basically all modern music is only at best 10% great and eternal, it's mostly filler.

  • I feel like there's a time and a place for all, hands down I prefer led zep over lady gaga but at a party what song am I gonna dirty dance to? Under Pressure isn't as fun to fist pump and grind to as Blow. But any other time classics FTW!

I think that all Modern Music sucks. The promotional officials, music producers, and the entertainers all are in it for the money. Plus the lyrics are gross and disgusting.

To me the greatest music ever is CLASSIC "REAL COUNTRY MUSIC" from 1919 through 1945/50.

Bad in what way? Disgustingly explicit for sure. If you mean that "Solider boy" trash yes I think its garbage too. If you mean the fact most of its made with computer that is very true. I like a lot of pop music from all generations. If you are going to pick at the stars themselves I suppose the older ones have a bit more substance.

I really dislike music that is all about sex, half naked girls, partying, sex, sex, girls.
it is the same shit all over again.
and that is exactly what that 90% is singing about.
i think they should write more about important things, and start being good rolemodels.

  • I don't understand why EVERY tune is auto-tuned? I can't stand all that whole genre of hip hop autotuning. Yuck. I don't get why it's popular when there are so many other genres of music out there.

No, there's some great stuff now when comparing to the late 90s or late 80s. Many of our popstars can sing (Rihanna, Beyonce) some write their own songs (Lady Gaga, Tinie Tempah) and rock music is doing great, it's at it's most unqiue and creative in years (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, KOL). People only think older music is better because they remember the good stuff ONLY. Sure, there were the Smiths, Bowie and the Kinks...but do you remember the Osmends???

All music seems bad if you are old enough to remember what came before. I didn't like people my parent's age criticising what I listened to, so let's not repeat those same mistakes.

Point taken. Maybe it's just mainstream music you don't like (the kind that makes the charts and gets on TV). There are plenty of other people out there making music. It just takes more effort to find them because they're not thrust at us. Better still, if you have judgement enough to know bad music, then you also know good music. Why not create your own music? You don't even need to play an instrument these days. While I do play an instrument, I also use a piece of software called Reason (from Propellerhead) which gives me the same power as a professional studio rack and mixing desk, plus banks of instruments, effects modules, percussion, and sequencing tools. There are better tools out there, but I like this one because it's extraordinarily pretty and it's like the real deal.

The only thing that hampers me is that I really can't sing. If you sing as well, or know someone who can sing, there'd be no stopping you.

In my opinion, its not the music's fault, its the radio which keeps on repeating it all the time which makes the music boring.

  • Music had entered an all-time low. Rap, hip-hop, garage, cheesy tween pop, house - all of it is completely worthless. We will never go back to the days when we talked with water and then with the vine.
