Is it normal to think native americans are racist?

It just seems like Native Americans don't like you if you're only part Native American, but I'm only part white and have no problem from whites so why is there this hostility towards people who are part Native American? Many go so far to say I shouldn't even call myself part Native American. It just seems really racist because I am part white. I may not be pure 100% Native American in my blood but that doesn't mean I can just pretend I am not of that ancestry.

Maybe it's because part Native Americans are annoying as Hell. In every conversation they find a way to mention how they're part native and because of that it makes them feel like they are automatically more understanding and sympathetic to native troubles then everyone else. It's bullshit.

I only mention it if someone asks me what my ethnicity is, because for whatever reason those genes are strong in me and makes me look obviously part native-american with common physical traits of often native-americans so it's not necessarily something I shove in people's faces except for my appearance which I can't help.

I do sympathize with their situation but I sympathize with any human being's plight regardless of race... it has little to do with my own ethnicity. But I kind of see what you're saying...

I do think it's racist for a part native-american to act like them or emulate their though since they don't even live in a tribe, I have seen this before from someone who obviously was mostly white, she even had blond hair yet she had all kinds of native-american type things in her place which was a little weird.

You don't have to be an american indian to think the culture is beautiful.

I don't have to be from india to decorate my house with Indian influences.

Don't get me wrong I also deal with racism from whites to that think just because I am part native-american that I know anything about them... which I don't. However I think white's racism is usually ignorance, once I make it clear it's just ancestry that usually clears it up by saying "well you're part English, have you ever been to England?" or whatever they are made up of.

    • Right. But many - if not perhaps most all - "part Natives" are simply frauds. I mean, haven't you noticed how seemingly EVERY White American proudly proclaims to be just a lil' bit Amerindian? Isn't it stranger still that they seemingly ALWAYS claim Cherokee?

To put it bluntly, they're lying.

That's quite a loaded comment. Not sure why anyone would lie about their ancestry. Not to say though they all are actually part native, but I don't see you claiming that all mixed black & whites are lying about their part blackness. Or perhaps you do, you go around insulting any person of mixed ancestry do you? Granted native-americans is a smaller group of people though today, it was always not so, they aren't mythical unicorns afterall and perhaps Cherokee is claimed often because they did inter-racially mix heavily. Granted if a white person looks mostly white they should just not worry so much about that likely 1-5% tiny residue of native-american in them as it's pretty much washed out and insignificant now I'm sure in many of them. But saying everyone who is part Native is lying a pretty huge assumption. It's a personal matter really, if someone wants to know they can get DNA mapping done to trace back their ancestry, It's only about $100.

    Only whites can be racist.

I don't agree with that at all. I think any group of people is capable of prejudices and ignorance and hate. I don't think all racism is created equal though, with whites I think it's often just ignorance and not necessarily hate.

I know a lot of super super nice native americans. A lot of them are drunks though.

Let me clarify, when I said drunks, I didn't mean anything negative by it, as the super nice ones drink a lot, but then there's ones that go overboard and punch holes in the walls of my friends house etc.

It's because of many of the hardships they endured. In Canada, the "residential school systems" scarred many of the First Nations deeply.

I'd rather have weed instead of alcohol, but maybe that's the part white hippy in me :P

I've noticed that too. I wouldn't call it racism, but then, if a white person was as discriminatory, it probably would be =/
but, I'm not sure Native american is it's own race..?

Race just means a group with shared commonalities. Which can be both, nationality, as in citizenship, or physical attributes.

I'm part native American too, but I don't know how common these attitudes are since I've never yet met a pure Native American.

It's because there's a trend among White and Black Americans to call themselves "part Native American" based on one ancestor, far back in their family history. Y'know, "I'm descended from an Indian Chief!" or "My great-great-great-grandma was an Indian princess!"

But I do know people who are genuinely part Native American; it's no more unusual, where I live, than being 1/4 or 1/8 Irish.

    I suspect it's a matter of obnoxious "part-Indians" giving REAL part-Indians like you a bad name. :(

In Utah, Native Americans can be very racist. Especially the older generation. Everywhere you go will have racism, its not just for white people after all.
