Is it normal to think mental disorders are cool?

I honestly am not trying to offend anyone if that should happen I apologize. Back to the subject. I think that people with mental disorders are cool because they (I hope) see the world differently than we do. I think it'd be cool to be in their perspective just to see what it's like.

It may be cool for you to think they are cool, but it's often not cool being them. Seeing the world differently comes with a heavy price.

Well I most certainly agree on this.^^

I myself have one... It sure isn't the most fun but at the same time I really don't know what it's like without this disorder.

I have a hearing disorder a long with it, my past wasn't great at all because I had so many speech problems. English was my worst subject for sure and still am not that great at it. I got picked on in school a lot, had sooo much testing done and plus my whole family had to see this happen. My family happens to have a great amount of empathy so they were stressed out a lot.

Plus there is so much more I could tell you but it would be about several pages long.

The good thing about it is though is that I don't know if I really would of been as happy about myself and as good of a person as I am today. But my family sure was a big help too. :) I feel proud to be where I'm at because other people who have my disorder are a lot worse than me. I just seem like a rather normal person when I'm truely not. I'm just an odd ball.

Also I think it's normal to be curious though, but it's not cool.

That's how I feel about the problems I've had in my own life. I wouldn't wish them on anyone, but - at the same time - I wouldn't wish them out of my past. People who've had difficult lives can empathise much more easily. :)

I sure agree on that. I think they also have more character to them too.

One of my guy friends he's crazy in a good way, he's nice and rather funny. He happens to have mild tourette's syndrome, which I think I probably notice more than others that don't have a disorder. I notice all the symptoms more but I don't think much about it of course. He told me about his issues but doesn't really care.

This is also truely one of the biggest reasons why I choose to be a virgin till I actually find someone rather special too. Don't need to take the risk of having a child that would go through the crap I went though or worse. I would for sure be more financally unstable for a long while.

Yup :) I studied Psychology for a while and loved it. We learnt about all kinds of stuff, like Multiple Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia, stuff like that. It was so good :O!

Trust me, it's NOT cool to have a mental disorders. I have 3 diagnoses...and yes, I do see the world through different eyes, but it's not a GOOD way to see things. I live in a world of pessimism, paranoia, and see everything as potential dangers. It's not cool for me. If you saw the world in the same way I do, you would kill yourself. Believe me, you do not want to know what it's like.

It's very "normal" to be curious about things you do not really understand.
In my opinion(an this is coming from someone with a mental disorder) it is not fun. My perception in life, a lot if the time is in a negative light. It is very hard for me at times to enjoy the small things because so mhcb can get me depressed. An a lot if the time I don't even know why.
Yes I can say that because in my "condition" I view the world totally different and I can say that because of my struggles I am a better person an so on. But me personally... I'd have liked to be a good person who views the world "uniquely" WITHOUT the hindrance of a mental illness.

Nice wordplay there, but you know it's not a mental illness, right?

DAMN RIGHT, I'M RIGHT!!! Oh, you agreed with me... Wrong emotion. Now THIS is a mental illness/mood/personality disorder, you see? :D

  • It wasn't cool getting myself completely drunk and then attempting to kill myself. Life didn't look so great from that angle.

And I'm not even joking, I did try that. Mental disorders are not even vaguely cool, they hurt and destroy so much. I wasn't the only one affected by my depression, my mother was hurting, my grandparents were hurting and I hurt even more because I was hurting them.

Even now I still suffer with social anxiety, I don't have a normal social life or hell, any social life. So being a sad lonely hermit is just great, who needs to go to parties or be able to walk outside without feeling scared?

Sorry if this is harsh but cool is not even in the spectrum of words I would use for mental illnesses.

It sounds to me that you might want to pursue a career in Psychology or Psychiatry. There is a problem with these fields of study, however. They often over-diagnose mental disorders. At other times they generalize and categorize people. Psychiatrists sometimes develop theories, which might or might not be correct, to explain different behaviours in humans and other animals.
It is important for the development of human civilisation, that segments of society, have a differing perspective on things.
What is sometimes lacking in psychiatric thought, is the simple notion that the society that we have developed around us, is in fact the cause of what they sometimes describe as a psychiatric disorder.
There are also real physical, biological or chemical reasons for some psychiatric disorders.

I have depression, which probably stems from having a form of autism. I have some slight temper issues, but fortunately it's never gotten too out of hand.

  • I've been diagnosed with several mental illnesses. I would say that being differant is part of who I am and makes me a more creative person. I would also say being differant has caused me lots of problems getting anywhere in life.

If you said interesting instead of cool you probably would of gotten more positive feedback. But it's normal to be curious like I said up there.^^

I find them rather interesting but I do have one so I love hearing about the different disorders out there. Although a lot of times it hard for me to be around them especially if they are severe because of the empathy I feel for them.

It's definitely not what it's cracked up to be, seeing the world from a different angle like we do is not fixable, i've tried.

When I was a kid I thought that mental disorders were cool (still do occasionally), but now that I'm older I've recently had to comes to terms with the fact that I have a mental illness. A illness that probably should be diagnosed, because it has caused me allot of problems since I was a kid. It's not all fun and games.

I would be so much happier if my brain didn't keep me from living life normally. It's not so great. Just different. Usually in a bad way.

I'm not gonna lie, some disorders I don't want to change. Some I find absolutely necessary.

Other than all the problems with work, being over sensitive which means if clothes shoes or anything dont fit 100% right i cant wear it, having loose joints, getting mad much much easier than normal people, and being bored all the time, the only thing i know that i cant learn is actually something simple which is tying shoes but that problem is already fixed...
