Is it normal to think claymation is creepy?

Ever since I was little, I've always thought claymation was creepy. My brother and I share this phobia, but I don't think there's a name for it. Gumby freaks us out. I'm not sure what about it is creepy, but it seems dark and sort of "empty" in a demonic way. Does anyone else share this fear?

  • I don't have that fear either, but I find claymation very unappealing and weird to watch.

I hate claymation. When I was a kid I had a reoccurring dream that I was made from clay and my body parts were falling off...I will not even watch a movie with my kids if it has any claymation in it..

Well, of course it's normal to think claymation is creepy. Why? Because it's like watching something unsettling and your mind can't process what's happening.

I'm a grown-ass college student and I seriously have some kind of weird extremist phobia of claymation. I can't handle it. I've watched about 10 minutes of Coraline, 10 minutes of the Nightmare Before Christmas, and about half of the Corpse Bride, and all 3 of those scared me half to death. There's something ridiculously horrific and almost satanic about the way Tim Burton does claymation... it's something with the limbo between animation and reality... but seriously. Tim Burton's characters are ridiculously scary! I'm thinking about the scenes where characters are ripped open and disgusting bugs or stuffing comes out or when a character twists or moves in an unnatural way or even characters' ugliness to the point of scariness, to be a little more specific. I just saw a commercial for that new one coming out with the dog and it just makes me feel uneasy and uncomfortable. Demonic describes it perfectly. I could go on forever about how much it freaks me out beyond comprehension, but I don't wanna bore you. It's just nice to know somebody else shares this phobia. Sorry that was so long... I had to get it out there. Whew.

I can understand where your coming from. I think that is may also come from the quality of the animation. First example of claymation that freaked me out was the original clash of the titans. The scene with medusa still creeps me out a little. However, newer higher end films cut down on this with shear quality. Just like everyone says, Coraline, Nightmare before christmas and others are artfully done.

    Give them a chance.

I love claymation and stop-motion films in general. Coraline is a stop-motion film and it is beautiful and well made. It's so well made that I thought it was computer animated at first. Also it's not your silly typical kids movie which is what it seems like from the previews... I do however agree with you that gumby is a really creepy show but don't let it ruin stop-motion films for you.
