Is it normal to think christmas is a con?

It's a way for the big toy companies to brain wash kids into pressuring their parents to buy them these expensive toys, that they will probably like for a year until they grow out of them.

You also buy things, that you would never usually buy just because it's Christmas. You spend money you would never usually spend, just because it's Christmas. You work so hard all year, spend your money at Christmas, paying it off, to then spend it again next year. It's become more about who spent what, and who got what, then spending time with your family.

Imagine if parents saved all the money on toys for their kids for the future, where they could actually use it to make a future for themselves?

This is consumerism, not Christmas. Look at every holiday, someone is trying to sell you something. Christmas is just the easiest one.

Christmas is an occasion to be with family. Everybody is smiling, everybody is nice. When you walk down the streets you can feel that there's something special in the air. Christmas is great.

If busines sees an opportunity - they take advantage of it - thats just business.

If you disagree with celebrating XMAS in an overly comercialized way, don't, and explain to others why - it all comes down to supply and demand.

North American's are consumer whores; North American business heard that call, and answered.

    Purchasing power.

Most "Christian" holidays started as pagan celebrations.
They were subsequently adopted by the Roman church, which acted as a wealth and land magnet. The Roman church grew exponentially, during the reign of Roman emperor Constantine (4th century A.D.). Although hailed as the "first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity," he actually began the filtering of pagan gods, traditions, and doctrines into what had been the religion espoused by Christ.
Personally, I celebrate "Festivus." I also shop yard, garage, and estate sales, along with 2nd hand stores, auctions, and junk yards. Recycle, reduce, reuse, respect.

Christmas is a con! How dare people be happy!

If your Christmases are like this, you're doing it wrong. Yes consumerism doesn't make me happy, and yes I think allowing your happiness to be determined by how much stuff you have and how expensive your stuff cost (especially if more expensive = more happy. Seriously, what is up with that?!) is ridiculous. But don't blame Christmas for that, blame consumerism. You don't even have to buy into consumerism if you don't want to :)

One thing I hate about Christmas (yes, from my time working in retail) is that people will use the concept of "Christmas is about sacrificing to give to your loved ones" to justify being 8 months pregnant, standing in a line wrapped around a building for 12-16 hours, freezing in the cold in order to do what? Buy their kids the newest Fairy Barbie Dolls? Buy a TV for the same deal that you could get at Wal Mart or off Amazon? It absolutely made me sick. That's not sacrifice. That's stupidity. Seriously. They could have come in at any point before that day and just walked into the store and picked up whatever the hell they wanted, no lines, no mess.

Personally, I could never be against the idea of Christmas. For millions, it is the one time of year that they get together as families, even if they hate each other, they are together. For millions of children world-wide, it is the one time of the year in which they will have anything near a semblance of an experience of a normal child; so many charities and organizations band together for this one time of year to give these children gifts, food, clothing and as best of a good season as they can. Consumerism or not, and yes, maybe it is somehow morally wrong that it has to be one time of the year in which people will put this much effort into it but regardless, Christmas brings joy to many, many families.

I do not like the fact that Christmas has become so consumer oriented and that some parents feel that, somehow, having nice, cool gifts under a tree is more important than them just being there to celebrate with their children, but I am an advocate for economic growth, so Christmas is beneficial, regardless of the mentality of many who celebrate it.

  • So because a few greedy businessmen take advantage of the occasion, that suddenly discounts all the other great aspects of Christmas?

It's become too monopolized by the big companies and turned into a gift-grabbing season but that doesn't mean you have to follow the crowd. Make of Christmas whatever you want. I personally enjoy the food, family, and general fun in getting together, sharing stories, and playing games. When you have your own kids bring them up with your own morals- instill in them the knowledge that Christmas is to be cherished, not greedily lusted after. Then you'll have a family who feel the same way you do.
