Is it normal to think "angel" is not an appropriate term of affection?

Many people refer to their children, girlfriends, pets, etc. as "angels" as a term of endearment, akin to "honey" or "sweety", etc. I find this to be strange.

The English term "angel" comes from the Judeo-Christian concept of a spirit being created by God. In the Bible, angels are depicted as carrying messages from God to men, unlawfully interbreeding with men to produce super-human giants, slaughtering thousands of God's human enemies, and carrying out God's instructions for Armageddon.

I fail to see what any of this has to do with being cute. Is this normal?

I think that common people won't quite go into the history of theology to get to the roots of the term 'angel' when using it. Layman look to pop culture and see that the term is used in a significantly more attractive and appealing way, so the term is used in the more pleasant and socially-accepted way. So, for lay standards you are over-thinking it. However, how you choose to define and use the term is perfectly fine, just accept the fact the common public do not so much agree.

Wow. You're even more anal than I am. I went out with a girl called Angela and she was always angel (except for when she was mad, then she was angry gorilla). Personally, if a girl used angel as a term of endearment for me, I'd fall at her feet. I think it's absolutely lovely. Definitely one of the many ways to my heart. Which reminds me: Angela always used to say the best way to a man's heart is through his chest with a chainsaw. She was funny. I miss that.

    • I guess you didn't read my story. I'd be pretty intimidated to be dating an angel.

I don't know if I would say it's not normal, but I don't agree. I use that term of endearment and see nothing wrong with it. It doesn't literally mean the person is an angel, it's just an affectionate name for someone you love.

Calling your loved one an infant isn't any less disturbing. Using "angel" as a term of affection is obviously not based on the Biblical concept of an angel but other contemporary depictions.

I sometimes call my honey "pookie" and I have no where that came from.

I hate when men call their gfs "fallen angels". Satan was a fallen angel! It's stupid.

i think i would hate to be called angel..then i would have to live up to the expectation of being angelic all the time. angels are pure and innocent and something i inspire to be but call me an angel and i will probably freak out...
