Is it normal to text someone u used to love, but pretend you mistext?

So, a guy that I was attached to, we both really loved one another.

I broke up with him 3 or 4 years ago. I wanted to check up on him to see how he was doing, because last I had talked to him, he was very depressed about us breaking up. I had changed my phone number because I wanted to move on.

Using an online free-text service, I texted him, pretended I mistexted, just to have a conversation with him again. I told him it was "me". He was depressed once again, I told him how I was doing, asked how he was doing.

I knew I had made a bad choice, but is it normal? He had to go to counseling because of our "attachment" (I'd say, we're toxic to one another, which is why I had decided to break up with him).

I see how you'd want to stay in touch because you're worried about him.
But under these circumstances it's probably best if you leave him alone. Give him a chance to move on aswell.

You broke his heart once more probably unless you want him back.
As the dumpee however I've once called a girl I used to briefly date as a teen just to hear her voice but I immediately said "oh sorry wrong number". She never knew it was me. It's just too long ago.
