Is it normal to tell someone you want to get to know them better?

Okay, so I text this kid once in awhile, but it never really gets far. We basically just talk about what we did that day, or what were up too, and sports.. Stuff like that, BUT I really want to tell him that I'd like to get to know him better, I'm just not sure how to ask him.. without it being just so random.. PLEASE HELP!!

    If this is a guy then being blunt wouldn't be a bad way to go since guys are blunt. I'm probably generalizing here, but as a guy, I would rather have a girl tell me she's interested in me than playing weird mind games.

    if the situation is a male/female one I think it's fine. If you are a guy talking to another guy I would find it pretty weird.

    I don't like it when people try to get to know me better. That usually makes me take my distances. I don't know why. I wasn't like that before. Even here on INN when a user PM me I'll ill at ease.
