Be yourself. You are trying to hard to fit in. It's easy for anyone to see how fake that is and you will be judged by others.

    • Agreed. If you have a more proper way of speaking than the person with whom you are having a conversation, let it be. Most likely you will understand each other, though not as easily as if you were speaking to someone of a similar upbringing.

Talk however you want. If anyone judges you for how you speak, you would be better off without them ;)

      Oh, I'm sorry.

I meant to say "greetings, person of color who is my acquaintance or friend".

      Yeah, that's much better.

No, it isn't better. It makes you look like an ass to talk like that.

Do you actually know the phrase "word" comes from? It's actually very eloquent.

I'm pretty sure I'd look like an ass either way.

More realistically, I'd probably just say "hello".

Enlighten me with some eloquence. Lord knows I need some.

Yeah, you can't say "nigger" if you're talking to a black person, or "spic" if you're talking to someone who's Hispanic, or "kike" if you're talking to a Jew, or tell any of those great ethic jokes!

I don't know if it's normal but I think everyone does this to some extent. I think you're trying to make a middle ground in communication.

Like with the refugees or foreigners in general, I'll either talk slower or less a less extensive vocabulary just to try to maintain an understanding.

You can take it too far of course, but to a certain extent it's fine, I think.
