Is it normal to take these?

About a year ago, I had some minor surgery done. The doctor didn't prescribe any pain killers to follow, he just advised me to pick up some OTC Acetaminophen, caffeine, codeine tablets. The Codeine is only 8mg, and honestly it worked pretty good for the pain. I refilled it back in jan of this year, and haven't refilled it again until the other day, July now.

My folks think I'm becoming an addict using this stuff so long after the surgery. Honestly I think they're full of it, since i only use it during some of my most brutal headaches. I've read up on the addictions, and it seems common in people using the Tylenol 3 versions of it which can have up to 64mg, 8 times the does i'm using.

Still, better safe then sorry, so I ask you, am i on the road to addiction here? Or are my folks just paranoid?

Codeine works wonders for pain. It's a problem when you start using it all the time, get withdrawal, feel the need to use it even when fine. A friend was addicted to pain killers, it's not a pleasant situation to be in. But I used it straight amongst prescription painkillers for three weeks and didn't have any want for it after. If you're concerned see your doctor.

  • It's normal. It's only drug abuse if your doing it when you feel fine or do it more than it says to. I do not include using because of feeling bad from drug withdrawls either.

There are medical warnings about everything you are taking, including caffeine. I think you should talk to a doctor and not us here on IIN about this one.
I was having horrible headaches in my 30's; totally incapacitating. I tried every pain medication available to no avail. One day, during a really bad headache, being thirsty, I drank a liter of Gatorade. Within several minutes my headache disappeared! It seems I was very dehydrated and low on the electrolytes that Gatorade has.
It may not help you, but at a buck or so, what have you got to lose?

It's normal to take what your taking for pain. I would say you were getting addicted when you start taking higher and higher doses, and Switching from Codeine(Vicodin) Oxycodone and other Opiate based things, they tend to be highly addictive only after a couple of weeks. Stay away from them they ruin many peoples lives.
