Is it normal to take anti depressants and still feel depressed?

I have been on prozac for 4 months and still feel overwhelming depression several days a week. It used to be everyday, so this is an improvement. What it means is that because I have some good days, the bad days feel even worse by comparison, and it makes me feel like a failure that even on meds I still can't be happy...

It is normal. Prozac is a crappy anti-depressant anyways. It felt like a placebo to me, so I asked for a change in medications....

Some anti depressants make depression worse. I would know. The very first time was put on any, it was Prozac. I wanted to kill myself. And I have been suicidal ever since. Then I developed anger problems. So I was put on Celexa. It worked GREAT! Then o stopped taking them. It is very normal. You just have to tell your therapist know you want to change to something else.

Prozac Is used for major depression as a ssri which a newer type used mostly because it has less possible reactions. You could ask for a tricylics which tends to be more effective and more time honoured medication but more side effects. Try asking for a medication called tofranil. I am on it and it works great! If it makes you feeling any better before I started tofranil, I made 23 unsuccessful (thank god) attempts at killing myself. Of course diverting your thoughts is also good as well.

Remember. No matter what people might say, you are a beautiful person

  • I actually don't really know why they were even invented to be honest. Everyone I know that has taken them still feel depressed. Also, how are pills supposed to make you not depressed anymore? People feel sad because of how life is going for them so how exactly are pills goin' to make you feel better if you're still living the same type of lifestyle? Hmm... come to think of it wouldn't you feel more depressed if you had to take medicine because you're depressed? (a bit of psychological stuff there maybe)

I don't know the science of them and what they do and all but clearly they're supposed to make you happier for a while...well doesn't weed (or other drugs) make people feel happy for a while? Couldn't anti-depressants just be the pill (and legal) version of weed? You can OD on pills...I doubt you can OD on weed. (Not trying to turn you into a smoker I'm just saying because this post just got me thinking)

Anyway, I realised that I'm the asking questions when you asked one first. Me, personally, I would ditch the pills and start from scratch if that makes sense. Find something to do that makes you happy (or intrests you) and keep doing it - like a hobby. There was a point where I was depressed and was going through life in a haze. Not to mention I hated my school with a burning passion. But I just wrote my true true feelings in a journal and I found things online that interest me and kept me out of my room all day. Make a goal and try to reach it (start small first). Get with someone you care about the most and try to find new things to do together. You probably won't do any of this and that's fine. It just helped me out. Don't get me wrong I'll have some days where I'm just sad and all but nothing like how it used to be...

Dr. might need to try a different medicine. Wellbutrin xl seems to work well for balancing out depression and anxiety.

The pills made it worse for me, so I went cold turkey on them. I know that's not what you're suppose to do, but I felt much better. If I was you though, if it's not helping, just take little steps to get off the medication / take different medication.
