Is it normal to start working out at 23?

I'm a skinny guy, 23, and underweight. I wanna start working out to gain muscle, but am worried people will find it funny seeing me in the gym as I look very weak. I'd probably start with 5lb weights. Should I go for it?

      To OP

Try curling a pencil first. If successful try two pencils.

People of all shapes and sizes go to the gym to workout. It sounds like you're just self-conscious. Go for it!

Normal! My bf has been exercising and lifting weights since he was 16, but he really admires when he sees newcomers at the gym picking up weights for the first time. Thinks its great people are willing to better themselves when they are fully capable.. Even if its just for physical appearance. I will be 22 in december and just started some lifting too. I used to only do cardio. Boring. People are usually friendly at gyms/mind their own business. A nice girl helped correct my form when squatting and I didn't even ask. She just saw me struggling a little. Gyms are good.

Most gyms are actually really friendly environments. Everyone there is trying to be healthy and get in shape and help each other reach goals.

Nothing wrong with working out at home either. I was really skinny. I started in my bedroom doing pushups and crunches. Then bought a couple of free weights to put on a little bit of muscle. Once I was tone I hit the gym and started gaining real muscle.

Let me know if you want any tips on gaining some muscle. I'm no body builder but I've come a long ways lol.

    I admire your will.
However if you are insecure you could also work out at home. It's much cheaper then a gym membership.
I went to the gym for a few years some time ago, and the longer I went the more I hated it.
It's different for everyone. I know people who have improved their self-esteem hanging around with bodybuilders at the gym and sharing the same interests. But I felt terrible being sorrounded by moaning giants.

Deside for yourself who you might be.

Why not? Everyone starts somewhere so no-one will laugh at you.
