Is it normal to spend new years eve with your mum watching tv

Feeling like a loser because I am 21 and spending new years eve with my mum just like I have been for all of my life. I have no friends but I have cousins who I'm close with but they were all busy & I just feel so depressed. We just got back from my grandmas and I was so miserable. Is my situation normal? How did you all spend your new years eve?

A few years back some friends were texting me to go to some party of a sort on new year's. I was hesitant to respond. In the end, I never answered and ended up staying at home because I got caught up watching The Little Mermaid on TV (I'm male, 23 years of age approximately at the time). True story.

  • Until I was 18, that is how I spent every new years. Then I moved out and worked over New Years for a couple years. Then I was back in school, and did New Years with my mother again... and now... I do New Years ashore with my boyfriend and (since we live a couple thousand nautical miles away) my mother does New Years alone... which is depressing. I wish she'd get some friends or convince me she is having a good time.

Awww...I typically spend my NYE asleep or alone in my room, but it's from choice. I just don't like the big fuss.

It kinda feels safer being away from the madness on NYE, anyway.

Maybe if you joined some classes or something in your area, you could make some friends for next NYE?

The best new years i could remember was watching it on TV with, only my mom. We didnt do anything special we just saw the ball drop, well we waited and watched it.

Every new years after that i didnt give a shit about, i didnt have any friends outside of school or the home in the neighborhood. I spent every new years afterward either working or, just by myself doing something else.

I dont give a shit about new year's.

The only reason why that new year's i spent with my mom, watching it on tv was special is because, i remember that, now.

Thanks! Maybe this new years ill watch the ball drop with my mom, and she won't care but, i might.

Exactly my situation, except I'm younger. But I'll probably be like this at your age too lol.

Its alright. I'm 21 too, and almost everybody I knew went out partying, while I stayed home. I don't mind it though, since I'm not much of the party type. I had to work the next morning anyway.

You should go out and meet people! Make some friends, talk to people at school, or build some bonds with your coworkers, and maybe they'll invite you to a party or something. You'll be fine. Good luck!

Just make some friends-go to school, take courses, meet people.

But there's nothing wrong with spending NYE with family. It's really more of a couple's holiday-unless you're willing to kiss grandma when the ball drops. lol

I hung out with friends last year, went to a NYE concert/party, it sucked, bad weather too. While I say HNY to people, I honestly don't care, just another year.

What matters is that I've progressed in life, getting better paid work, more vacations, better car, buy a house, hot date, etc, then I'm happy.

More fun than listening to one of your mates puking in the bathroom and discussing who should be the next to hold his hair. NYE is bit of a pointless night, to be honest. Not that it isn't sometimes fun... but it's just another night. Any night can be fun.

Nothing wrong with that. My brother and I always leave parties before the ball drops just to pray with our mother to thank God for the year and welcome the new year. I made it to her house at 11:49p.m. last night with enough time to pray. I think if I would have missed it, I would feel devastated to break this tradition that we have started.

I'm going to be honest and say I don't think this is normal. It is a time to spend with friends ideally. It is not that it is bad just that you aren't making the most out of life this way. I used to be a very lonely individual and then I decided to make a change, it took me a while but now I have a lot of friends and I am much happier. Try to not feel depressed but use those feelings towards making positive changes and use the feeling you get from making those changes to inspire you to do more. It is worth making the effort to get the most out of life.

It's hard to say that she can just change though and get friends. You don't know her situation.. It's good that you changed, but you don't know her situation anyones.. sometimes you can't just "go get friends"

Don't worry about NYE. Hell, I spent mine away from family. Sometimes its good to stay away from all the fuss. I stayed home watching a romantic comedy lol.

I had to work but I went onto the roof of the building and drank a light beer and watched the fireworks. It was interesting from my rooftop vantage point to watch all the action unfold and the police, fire and ambulances rush about the city.
